Understanding my doctors perspective, your opinions please.

I asked my doctor in the beginning about coloring my hair and she said just not in the first trimester.

Then when I went and was at 13 weeks I asked again and the other doctor in the practice told me nothing permanent and highlights.

It confuses me, highlights still touch the roots. I mean what really is the damage? So many doctors say it's ok, so many women do it and everything comes out ok. My roots are AWFUL and my natural color is a light brown and I dye it an almost black so it's very noticeable. I really want to take care of this.

I wonder what ya'll think I should do about it? If it really hurts to dye my hair out of the box?

Re: Understanding my doctors perspective, your opinions please.

  • My doctor and another doctor at my practice both told me that it was fine, just try to be ventilated. I think it was more the fumes they worry about then the dye touching the routes. I do know that there are a lot of mixed opinions out there. I dyed through my pregnancy with my son, and my roots are killer, so I'll probably color out of the box this weekend. Good Luck

  • I honestly don't really think its that big of a deal. I know others might but I dyed my hair the other day. It doesn't get into your blood or anything. I just always make sure to do it in an open area so the smell doesn't get to be to much. Also, I get the ammonia free which I think most are these days.
  • I think it's fine to do, but if you are concerned go for highlights. They really do not touch the scalp like a full color does.

They also make some dyes that are safer than others (more natural). I do not know the brands, maybe someone else can comment...

  • My mother said she bleached her hair throughout her entire pregnancy with me, and in my opinion, I came out ok ;)
  • If you're concerned about it, you could always go in for lowlights. Otherwise, like PP said, just a semi-permanent ammonia free would probably be just fine.

  • I've noticed that there are henna-based box dyes out there, that can be found at natural food stores like Whole Foods/Sunflower Market/Sprouts; but they're semi-permanent...I just called Whole Foods and they have permanent dyes as well, that are ammonia free/respherol free/paraben free, and the developer just has peroxide in it. They run $16.99/box. While that's not as cheap as, say, F?ria, it's still cheaper than the $120 you'll pay at a salon; so it might be worth a try? Smile

  • My doctor said it was fine. I dyed my hair in my first pregnancy and with this one already.

I just had a friend mention the henna based dye and she still uses it now (she had a son 4 years ago).  Her hair always looks great and I love the fact that its natural.  If you want to be super safe IMO this is the best way to go!
