Cloth Diapering

Stink and Diaper Pail Solution

For the past three months, I've been using a FB hanging diaper pail. In the past week or so, I've been noticing an odor. I don't know if it's that I'm not washing my diapers as often as before (I had a much smaller stash until about a month ago), or if there's some sort of issue with the bag itself, or that her overnight diapers are just stinkier (we used to change her all night long) or if she's just producing more waste now she's bigger.... or what.

But I'm trying to devise a new system that will help contain the stink a little more. i.e. a pail.

However, it's nearly impossible to find a simple trash pail with a lid in my town. Does everyone seriously get $100 Simple Human stainless Steel monstrosities?  That's a whole other rant.

Ideally, I'd like to not have to buy new bags, but I don't know if I can use the hanging pail as a pail liner. Does anyone do this?

I also saw this video where the lady had attached her hanging pail to the inside liner of a wicker hamper with sewn-in carabeaners (sp?) but I don't know if that will help contain the smell or if it's just a lot of effort for the result.

Anyway, if anyone has some advice or can point me in a direction, I'd really appreciate it. Sorry if this post is rambling -- I had to get up every hour last night to check on the baby because she took a little spill yesterday and has a big ol' bump on her noggin'.

Re: Stink and Diaper Pail Solution

  • We have a $15 diaper pail from Babies R Us.  I do have a Planetwise Pail Liner but on "laundry days" we use a large pillowcase in there.  Might me an option for you...

  • I use a pillowcase half the time. I really like using it because it doesn't hold any water and gets washed well every time. I avoid a smelly nursery by moving the pail into the laundry, but I don't know if that as option for you.

  • We have two hampers in our house - one is a simple white plastic trashcan with lid (about $10 from Target) and a planetwise liner. The other is a round wicker laundry hamper with a lid and the cotton liner it came with (about $20 from Wal-mart). The lidded trashcan is in the nursery and will take your breath away when you open it to put another diaper in. The wicker hamper on the other hand sits in a nook in the hallway near our laundry room and you would never know there were dirty diapers in it. I am thinking about switching over so that we have two wicker hampers for diaper pails.
  • but does the wicker leak the smell out to the rest of the room? that's my concern with my current hanging pail system.

it's not feasible to keep my diapers anywhere else but her nursery. i change her there (upstairs) and our laundry room is a far corner of our basement.

and the other issue is finding a reasonably priced pail. i was at target the other day and their one (enormous) wicker laundry basket with a lid was $60. They didn't even have trash cans with lids (except for swing lids) for less than $80! it's all this ridiculously expensive "simple human" crap. same thing at grocery store, hardware store, and home depot. what happened to rubbermaid?

  • We use a white plastic trash can from Walmart with a swing top lid. As a liner we have just a generic white mesh laundry bag that gets thrown into the wash with the dipes. We have two that we swap out. I find that the pail gets really stinky if we start going 2-3 days between washes or we have to spray down a poopy diaper. As long as we stick to every other day, though, it's ok, and I tend to start a load rather than throw a sopping wet sprayed diaper in the pail.

We also give the pail a little Baking Soda sprinkle before putting in a fresh liner.

  • We have a foot press trash can from BBB, maybe $30, and our changer, dipes and pail are in the bath room, works great
