Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How many meals per day

are you feeding your LO if you started solids at 6 months?

DD will be 8 months tomorrow and is eating 2 meals per day and per wholesomebabyfood, it suggests around 9 months but some start at 7-8 months.

I'd like to wait t'ill she is 9 months to start 3 meals per day considering I sometimes have a hard time of getting her to finish her bottles and I know formula is more important then solids at this stage. Just wondering what everyone else is doing?

TIA!

Re: How many meals per day

  • 3 or 4 meals, plus lots of breastmilk still.  But, my DD is also only 16 pounds as of yesterday, so she can use all the calories & fat she can get.

  • I've been doing 3 meals a day since 8 months but he hasn't cut down on nursing sessions at all since we started solids.  Maybe he's taking less at a time, but I don't know.

  • DS is a little younger than your LO, but we just started 2 meals a day.  I think we'll be doing this for a while.
  • I plan to do 2 meals/day until he starts acting more hungry or around 8 months, whichever comes first.

  • we do 2-3 meals a day, but she wont eat much at a meal. like the whole 1/4th cup of cereal? forget it. i'm lucky if i can get her to eat 2 tablespoons at once. so i'll give her a 2 oz of fruit (and maybe a tbsp of grains, if she'll take it!) in the am, maybe something grainy in hte afternoon (most of the time it needs to be mixed with fruit for her to eat it), and 2oz of veggie in the evening. she's just starting meats too, so i'll give her like an oz or so from the jar. in general, i am for 4-6oz solids/day with at least 24 oz of formula.
  • We have been doing 3 meals a day since about 8 months but we keep them small.  She was just doing like 2 ozs of cereal in the morning, 2 ozs of food (1 oz of 2 different things) at lunch and 1 - 1 1/2 oz of something else for dinner.  It was enough to make it part of the routine without detracting from her still nursing enough.

She is just now in the last 2 weeks up to 4 oz of cereal, 4 ozs (still 2 things so 2 and 2) at lunch, and 2 ozs for dinner.  If you are concerned about the solids making up too much of their diet this is a good way to balance it so they still get them and get to try lots of different things but don't eat more than they need.

  • 3 meals / day, approx. 3-4 oz of food / meal & drinking 30 oz of formula / day.

LO is pretty small, 3% for weight @ 6 months & always finishes his bottles/meals

  • We give our son 1-2 meals a day. I'll give him one sometime in the morning if we're not out running around the whole time and then my wife and I give him a meal around 5:30pm, about an hour before bedtime.

So far he's in love with butternut squash, applesauce, prunes, mango, banana and pears. Peas have been his least favorite so far (can't say that I blame him).

  • DD is a couple of weeks younger than your DD and we also started solids at 6 months. Pedi told us to start at 2 meals a day, but sometimes we only have time for 1 meal around dinner time.

She'll usually finish whatever we feed her, unless it's a new food. She also has about 32oz of formula a day. She's a little chub chub!
