How do solids affect bm intake?

We introduced ds to solids 3 weeks ago and just upped him from 1 to 2 solids meals per day.  At what point will he start to consume less breastmilk because he's consuming more solids?  Should I be making sure he keeps up his milk consumption up until a certain age?  I guess I'm concerned about feeding too much solids and him then not getting enough milk because he's full.  We'll also ask at the pedi appt next week, but was just curious what others are doing.

Re: How do solids affect bm intake?

  • Our pedi told us that eventually he will be eating about half and half.  So half his calories from BM and half his calories from solids.  Right now, DS eats about 25 - 28 oz of breast milk a day (I EP) and we just increased his solids to 3 meals a day.  Morning is the smallest at about 2 oz.  Lunch is about 3 oz and dinner is about 4 oz.  I find it odd that morning is the smallest since he just woke up and should be starving.  Whatever works I guess!  Just for reference, he used to eat about 30 - 33 oz of breast milk.  So he's down about 5 oz.  We always offer the bottle first and then solids.  Eventually I want him to get on a schedule like this:

6:00 am - 5 (or 4) oz bottle and breakfast (fruit and yogurt or oatmeal)

    9:30 am - 5 oz bottle

1:00 pm -  4 oz bottle and lunch (veggies and maybe meat or fruit)

    4:30 pm - 5 oz bottle

6:30 pm - Dinner (veggies and maybe meat or fruit)

7:30 pm - 4 oz bottle and bed
