PLEASE HELP! DS screams when we leave him in his room for naps/bedtime!

All of a sudden, two days ago, DS SCREAMS bloody murder when we leave him in his room for naptime and bedtime. Normally, we put him down drowsy but awake, we leave his room, and he soothes himself to sleep. We sleep-trained him (Ferber) when he was 6 months old, and ever since we haven't had this issue. So for 2 days we've been letting him CIO and checking in every 2, 5, 8mins etc and he settles down as soon as we walk in the room, but goes ballistic and gets all sweaty, screams until he looses his voice, stands up, and just goes NUTS once we leave again! ugh...why is this happening?!?!

Is this normal at this age?? He's been going through some separation anxiety in the past few weeks and he's clingy to me, but it never effected his sleep/naps. I don't think it's teeth or anything else bothering him because he's fine laying there when we're in the room, just as soon as we leave he looses his mind. His lovey and seahorse is in his crib with him...nothing is different at all. I'm so stressed.

HELP!!!

I thought this too, but he does it for naps too and it's light in his room during the day. I guess it's worth a try though....

  • This is us too. DD has been going crazy when she gets put down for bed. I am with you on the separation anxiety. I will say that tonight is the first night in weeks that she did not scream and the only difference is that I pushed back her bedtime by about 20 minutes so she was really tired and we walked into her room with the lights on. Normally just the hallway light is on when we go into her room. Maybe it is a night light thing too. I have heard from others that it is a phase and should get better soon. I hope it does for your LO. I know it is hard to hear and breaks your heart. Stay strong and keep doing what you are doing.

  • I think you are describing my DS! The past 2 days he has been doing the same thing and I am at a loss too. I don't really have any advice, but wanted to let you know you are not alone.

  • That's a pretty normal age to go through some separation anxiety.  We've never sleep trained, so my advice might be useless, but maybe you could stay in the room until he falls asleep?

  • We just started having this problem and I think I figured it out for us. We have one of those tap lights in his room so when we bring him to bed there is enough light for us to see but not a ton of light to wake him up. He has always slept with it really dark in his room. I realized tonight that when we walked into his room he started to look up at the ceiling and didn't want me to leave. He was seeing shadows on the ceiling and walls. I'm hoping it is just a phase. He at least quiets down in less than 5 minutes usually.
  • That's how my DD has been too! However when she goes to my Mom's house 1 day a week she doesn't do it! Makes me think it's separation anxiety. I hope it passes soon for all of us! I hate hearing her cry!
