Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Night feeding/weaning Question

DS still wakes up 1-2 times per night to nurse. He usually wakes up around 1 for the first night feeding and then around 4-5 for the second. There have been a few times he has slept until 4 before wanting to eat and has only STTN once (around 3 months old). I think he may still need a night feeding until he likes solids a bit more.

I would like to start weaning him off one of the feedings. Which feeding would you wean first...the earlier feeding (around 1) or the second one (around 4)? He goes to bed at 7. He gets up around 6:30-7:30 for the day.

Thanks!

Re: Night feeding/weaning Question

  • DD goes to bed at 8 and wakes up at 7. Pedi told me to wean off give her big dinner cereal+solids and a good nursing. Wean off the midnight feedings and nurse again at 4am.

So I'd say the 1am feeding.

  • I'd say try to get rid of the first feeding. Solids may or may not help with sleeping.. I know with DD it didn't make a bit of difference.

We took the paci, did a one arm swaddle so she could soothe herself, and started some CIO. She now consistently gives us 8-10 hours straigh.

  • According to my Pedi, he should be able to go an extended period of time at night without food. He just may be used to the cycle "I wake up, get to hang out with Mommy and eat, go back to sleep." My daughter was doing this and I was exhausted. We used "The Baby Whisperer" pick up/put down method of helping the baby soothe himself back to sleep when he wakes. Obviously, every baby is different - good luck!

  • My ds has very similar nighttime feeding habits.  Instead of eliminating one feeding, I'm trying to reduce the amount that ds eats at both feedings in the hopes that he'll start sleeping through them after his belly gets used to not being filled up in the middle of the night.  I've had some success doing a switcheroo with the paci.  I'll nurse him for a brief time (maybe 1-3 minutes) and then swap the paci in for the boob.  It doesn't always work, but when it does it really shortens the amount of time I'm awake and makes me realize that he really didn't need food, just comfort. I want to feel confident knowing he doesn't need the overnight feedings before I start being strict about taking them away.
