Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone's baby have to wear a helmet/cranial band? (repost from 9-12)

My son got a helmet on Monday. He has torticollis and plagiocephly..he is 4.5 mo. old.  I was just wondering what others' experiences have been with the helmet. He seems to be adjusting fine so far, it's me who is kind of bummed that he has to wear this.  I miss seeing his head and it's a totally different feeling when I hold him. I know it's for his own good and the doctor said he'd probably be out of it in 4 months, so it's a short period of time overall, but right now seems sooo long!  Would love to hear any advice/feedback/success stories/experiences any of you have had if your LO had to wear a helmet!

Re: Anyone's baby have to wear a helmet/cranial band? (repost from 9-12)

  • My DD just got out of her helmet yesterday!  I was told she would need to wear it for 4 months but only had it for just under 3 months.

It was hard for me to adjust to it but my DD was never phased by it.  The thing that made it easier for me was hearing off the wall comments / questions from strangers.  Such as,  "did you guys ride your bike here today?"  hehe

The helmet was nice for when she was learning to sit up unassisted.  She toppled over a number of times but didn't get hurt because of the helmet.  :)

I learned how to snuggle and kiss her with the helmet.  I admit that I love that she doesn't need the helmet now but once I got used to the helmet, it didn't bother me.

Time will zoom by and since your DS is still young his head will most likely round out pretty quickly.  At your 2 week follow up appointment you'll be happy that you decided to helmet.

Here is the scan that compares my DD's first scan to her scan yesterday.  She had the STARband helmet.

  • Thanks so much for your post, it is very encouraging!  My DS has the STARband helmet too.  I noticed that kind covers more of the head than other kinds - bummer! That is awesome that your DD only had to wear it for under 3 months, I hope the same is true for us!  His "number" was 13, so a little more than your 10.  It's good to know that his head WILL round out and the helmet will work, it's just a matter of time.  Thanks for posting and enjoy your DD without her helmet!
