Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 Month Naps

Hey y'all,

I am an infrequent poster on the bump but have a question about naps that I thought you ladies might have some insight on.  My DS is 7.5 months old and has been sleeping very fitfully during the day for over a month now.  He is taking 2 naps - one around 9 AM and then another between 1-2 PM depending on how long the AM nap was.  From experience, he needs at least an hour in the AM and 2 hours in the PM to be rested.  Any less than that and he falls apart.  So when he starts fussing a hour into the PM nap I know he is not done sleeping.  So anyways, my question.  I have been leaving him when he starts fussing early and he will fall back to sleep 99% of the time.  However, this fussing/tossing (we have a video monitor) can last up to 25 minutes before he goes back to sleep.  Is this normal?  Anybody go through a similar experience with their LO?

Bedtime is around 7 PM and he sleeps through the night.  He tends to be a bit fitful early on in the evening but after I go to bed I usually don't hear him till morning.

He has been dealing with ear infections (which we believe are gone at the moment - I keep watching for signs of that) and has gotten one tooth and I believe I see the other one coming up.  Could this just be teething pain?  Or maybe a developmental thing?  He doesn't seem to be approaching any big milestone but maybe it will just come out of nowhere.

Sorry, so long!  Any advice would be great!

Re: 7 Month Naps

  • My son is almost 8 months, however as soon as his bottom teeth started moving up his sleeping completely changed.  I did notice that prior to this he would start waking up a few times throughout the night but would go back to sleep pretty easily with little or no assistance.  He usually naps in the morning for about an hour, however there are times where he won't sleep at all if he's not on me, like today.  Afternoon naps are also about two hours, however those can be an hour or less some days.  I think development, teeth and just changes in general are to blame.  My DS will also toss for a while and sometimes will get himself back to sleep and others will just keep going until he gets himself worked up into a fit and starts really crying and I have to go in.  I think you are doing everything you are "supposed" to.  I still go in and feed him!!!  Sorry I have no real advice.  Just know you are not alone.

  • mrsh,

Thanks for the reply and encouragment!  It is really comforting to know that we are not the only ones dealing with sleep issues.  Our boys are really close in age - so it is probably all the same stuff.  Like you said, hard to pinpoint one thing that is causing the sleep interruptions.  Hope little boy starts sleeping better for you too!
