did pregnancy really mess with your teeth/gums???

I have always had really good teeth, not many cavities or other issues with them. It seems as though this last pregnancy really messed up my mouth. I think i might have a couple cavities and i have noticed that my gums seem to be receeding a little bit which is causing a couple of my teeth to have a mild quick pain (sensitivity) if touched by toothpick or fingernail or if certain toothpaste just sits on that tooth(area). It isnt bothered by hot and cold that i have really noticed. I have been going insane over it and putting off going to the dentist because im afraid they would say i need a root canal (which i cant not afford). I finally made an appt with the dentist and in the meantime have been doing some research on the internet about it. What i have read so far says that it is common for this to happen (in general) and caused by aggressive brushing (which i think i have a habit of doing). There are easy options to further prevent this problem with brushing gently, using a special mouthwash and paste. One thing i did find was using Bee Propolis has shown to help with the gums to grow back if it is a mild case. Anyone heard of this Bee Propolis stuff????  Anyone else having these same issues? If so what actions did you take to better your mouth/teeth/gums?

  • I hadn't made any connection to pregnancy, but my dentist found 3 cavities while I was pregnant and I'd only had 2 in my entire life up until that time, so now I wonder if pregnancy had anything to do with it?  I'm not sure what can be done other than brushing and flossing regularly and seeing your dentist.  I understand that money is an issue for you, but it'll only be worse if you wait and your teeth deteriorate even more.

  • YES!  I've never had even a cavity - ever and have always been told I've had great teeth.  Just two weeks ago I went for my regular 6 mo check and was told I needed a crown - WHAT?!?  The dentist had no explanation other than pregnancy.  I was so upset.  I'm over it now, but I couldn't believe it.

  • YES!!  My teeth are super sensitive now.  It helps if I brush with warm water, but I forget about half the time and it kills.

  • I've had major problems. When I got pregnant I still had my wisdom teeth and 3 of the four were still impacted and they all started to surface during the pregnancy, which caused a world of hurt. I also had a problem with some severe cavities, two of which resulted in me having two teethe pulled (one was a wisdom tooth). It was all really really paiful. I have a theory that the cavity thing had something to do with a calcium deficency during my pregnancy. I'm really worried that the same thing will happen to me with my next pregnancy.
  • Yes!  I had the gum problem for awhile but it got really bad I think after during/after pregnancy.  I had pregnancy gingivitis (and had a part of my gums that got SO inflamed for no reason really and would bleed without any cause.  Right up front.  I looked like a vampire hah)  I have such dentist anxiety, I HATE going.  I know I'm going to need a lot of work but I don't have the money for it either and not only that but it literally gives me anxiety attacks.  Plus, my dentist who I love is no longer covered by our pathetic iinsurance so I would have to find a new one.  I keep putting it off :(  I want to go and get knocked out hahaha like I did for my wisdom teeth.  That's literally how bad my anxiety over the dentist is.

Rubia... are we the same effing person????  I have severe dentist anxiety (partially cause I can't pay for it, and partially cause I haven't been in so long) also.  My teeth thankfully didn't get any worse with pregnancy, though.

Haha we must be! I always wanted a sister.  And I am a gemini, so you may just be my twin :oP  I'll take it!  Plus that means I get another gorgeous nephew, sounds good to me :)

I definitely think mine did get worse.  I'm so afraid to find out though.  I loved my old dentist.  He would numb up all problem areas and give me gas and he would clean my teeth that way instead of the hygenist.  I'd still have heart throbbing anxiety in the chair but the gas would help haha.  He knew my bad areas, and he listened.  Plus my aunt works there as an assistant so it was the  best scenario for me aside from sedation dentistry which I'm pretty darn sure insurance doesnt' cover haha.

  • I actually didn't have any cavities during pregnancy but had 2 a few months after I gave birth.  Luckily for me though my SIL is a dental hygienist and my FIL is a dentist, so they keep a good eye on my teeth.
  • Yep! I always had perfect teeth before being pregnant. I never had a cavity or anything. Since being pregnant, I have gotten 2 cavities filled and the dentist said there may be a couple more, grr...
