NCDR: 20 week Ultrasound - gender but nervous news

So we went to our 20 week ultrasound on Monday. The tech said everything looked good, sizing was right (good due date) and we are having a BOY.

But then the happiness flew out of me when the doctor came in to say the stomach on one view was slightly larger than the normal range. She said this could mean that he just swallowed fluid and hasn't passed it yet but it could also indicate an issue. She said not to worry, but who doesn't worry when a doctor says "possible problem" and wants us back in 2 weeks.

So I'm excited about finding out we are Team Blue but nervously awaiting for our next appointment. My hope would be them saying everything is perfect at the next appt and then just allowing us another chance to see our baby boy and get more photos.

But I post because I want to know if anyone has been through anything like this before.

  • not the same thing exactly, but our daughter had an abnormality show up on her ultrasounds, too. she had a two vessel cord, which can be an indicator of defects or differences but it turned out to be nothing in our case. i worried about it until the day she was born, so i can relate. hopefully the next ultrasound will ease your concerns.

congrats on finding out you are having a son! :)

  • I don't have anything like this specifically, but we did have a "wait and see" problem that was monitored by u/s and thankfully cleared up on its own.  I hope that this is the case for you as well.  Im sorry you got worrisome news, but congrats on the boy! Good luck to you!
  • I have no experience or wisdom but wanted to extend my empathy for how frustrated and worried you must be.  Right Hug

  • DD's abdomen measured large at about that stage and throughout the rest of the pregnancy.  I was a borderline GD (meaning that I was just below what they would consider diabetic), and so they attributed it to that.  They just watched it.  Everything turned out fine.
  • Not really the same issue, but similar.

At my 20 week ultrasound, it showed that DS had extra fluid in one of his kidneys. The doctor explained that, while they would continue to monitor this issue throughout my pregnancy, the technology of the ultrasounds shows things that aren't really issues. The doctor also explained that even though they didn't think there was a problem, legally they had to inform me. DS ended up have 2 ultrasounds after he was born and everything is fine. No extra fluid.

I hope everything turns out perfect. And remember, a lot of the stuff they tell us isn't because they are worried... it's because the ultrasounds are too good at detecting everything and they have to.

  • Congrats on your boy! I had the opposite problem with my younger two kids.  Both their stomachs measured small for their gestational age.  We had to go back for a follow up each time and each time they were fine.  Sometimes it is the position that they are in that can cause an off measurement as well.  Try not to stress and just take it one day at a time.  Hugs to you.
