What does everyone think of a bassinet? I have a crib already however the baby's room will be upstairs and our bedroom is downstairs. I think I would like a bassinet to have in our room for the first few months. I have heard babies outgrow them quickly though. Anyone have any thoughts or advice? Thanks in advance!
Re: Bassinet?
We used one too because like PP, I BF and it was easier to have him in the room. Plus I was pretty paranoid about SIDS so I liked having him close. We just used the bassinet with our stroller: https://www.bumbleride.com/strollers/bassinet.php (obviously not with the cover over it though).
We moved Rowan when he was around 2 and a half months to his crib. By then he was sleeping through the night (somewhat).
We used ours the first few months, it was so nice to have Chloe next to our bed for BF also.
We bought ours at Once Upon A Child in perfect condition and a fraction of the cost. So I would recommend looking there to save a little money for the short time it is used.
We have a Eddie Bauer bassinet. I like the idea of it, but DD wouldn't sleep in it. Part of me thinks it was because she had reflux and always wanted to be held. Once she started being more independant I tried putting her in there again and she would wake up as soon as one of her arms hit the side of the bassinet. Fail.
We ended up buying a Fisher Price Rock N Play sleeper which is now one of my favorite baby items. It's very easy to move around the house and to take to grandma's or whatever. Plus, the weight limit is 25 lbs, which is really nice. Once your LO is mobile though, you have to stop using it. At 5-ish months DD sat up and then stood up in it and we knew it was time to pack away.
It would have been a total waste of $$ for us. My child refused to sleep anywhere except for in someone's arms for the first several weeks of his life and after that, he only slept in his swing.
A PNP with a bassinet attachment or an Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper would be much more practical IMO.
With Ellie, we had a bassinet my FIL made in our room. She refused to sleep in it!
We borrowed a friend's co-sleeper this time around and it worked out great, especially when we were still BFing and even after we switched to formula. It was nice to have the baby right there in our room and not have to get out of bed to feed her. We moved her to her room after she started STTN (at 3 weeks!).
I highly recommend the Arms Reach co-sleeper because it can attach to the side of your bed - no baby lifting required, you just roll over and nurse.
We used ours for more than 7 months, and plan to use it with #2, so it was incredibly useful.
