Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Constipation help!

LO is 6 1/2 months old and started solids about 6 weeks ago. He is still EBF in addition to the solids. He had completely normal BMs until this last week. The poo's got smaller and smaller each day last week until finally they were smaller than a quarter. Now he hasn't poo'd in the last 4 days. He is definitely trying to poo with all the straining and grunting but hasn't been successful.

I called the pedi this morning and the nurse recommended 1 tsp of brown sugar with 2oz of diluted apple juice and then try a rectal thermometer to stimulate the BM. Well we tried the juice this afternoon and nothing happened in the following 4 hours so I gave the thermometer a try and was able to stimulate a medium size poo to come out.  But I would think there would be more, right? I also have pedia-lax liquid. Should I try that? Would I give half the recommended dose for children for a 6mo? Please help!

Re: Constipation help!

  • If your lo has started w solids go get some prunes (we use gerber 1st's)...it usually only takes 1/2 container once a day to get my lo's bm's to get going again =) GOOD LUCK!

There may not be any more, maybe he hasn't been eating as well as he was because his stomach was crampy from not being able to go to the bathroom.

Is he still straining to go?  If he is, then I would give him baby pear juice or some 100% no sugar added prune juice (diluted, about an ounce mixed with BM or water).  I would not give pedia-lax liquid unless you talk to your doctor first.  That stuff can cause horrible crampy pains and severe diarrhea, which will just dehydrate LO.

  • I would use the thermometer again.  You have to hold it there for about 90 seconds, even once he starts going, if you stick the tip back in and it has poo on it (sorry for the TMI) then do it again.  DS has had tons of constipation issues and we've had to do this.  Then as pp stated follow up at his next meal with half to 3/4 of a container of prunes.  GL!  Sorry LO is so uncomfortable!

  • Hi Mrs. Major. This is Ann, part of the Medical Affairs Department at Fleet Laboratories, the manufacturer of Pedia-Lax. We know parents trust us with their children?s relief, so it?s important to us that parents understand they should only give our products to their children according to the intended use; according to the dosage instructions, you should consult with a doctor when dosing a child under 2 years old. It?s hard to see your child uncomfortable, but you are doing just the right thing by calling your pediatrician. He or she is best able to make recommendations for relieving LO?s bowel symptoms. I hope he?s feeling regular again very soon!

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to email me personally at huntan@cbfleet.com or visit www.pedia-lax.com and fill out the contact form.

    Sincerely,

     Ann

  • Hi Roxpup. This is Katie at Fleet Laboratories, the manufacturer of Pedia-Lax. I am sorry to hear about any child who has had an uncomfortable experience with a Pedia-Lax product. While we formulate all our products to work gently and as comfortably as possible, unfortunately, some discomfort can occur when using any brand of laxatives. No mom ever wants to see her child uncomfortable, but when their little ones do need relief, it?s wonderful that so many moms are able to offer their advice and experience to help each other.

    Sincerely,

    Katie
