how many of you have a lo who is allergic to peanut butter?

we recently found out our lo is and it was a bit scary. bright red cheeks and puffy lips. now we have to steer clear of anything peanut butter related <<no other nut allergy>> and at times it can be a bit hard.

  • My J is allergic to diary, eggs, nuts and seeds. We were told to avoid tree nuts as well, even though they didnt show up on the test. I find that peanuts are the easiest to avoid out of his allergies...

  • we have milk, egg, peanut and tree nut allergies over here.  i agree with PP, avoiding the peanuts has never been a problem - its all the other stuff!  we use either soynut butter (gross, imo - but DS loves it) or sunbutter (actually not too bad!) .  i think its harder for me and DH to not have peanut stuff and to keep it out of the house - no more thai food! :(

  • We are also peanut allergic here.  I don't find it too hard to keep it away from her because I'm with her almost all the time.  We just keep the house peanut free.  I'm not as vigilant about products that say "may be processed in same facility or equipment," but I do keep an eye on her and the epi pen and benadryl are always close by.  I will worry more when she goes to preschool or is out and about without me to see what everyone is eating around her.
  • We just found out a couple weeks ago DS is allergic to peanuts :( We now have an epi pen for him and we will probably be getting allergy testing.

  • I have a niece with a PB allergy so I haven't given DS any yet.
  • My DD does.  Like pps, I don't find it all that hard to avoid.  I also avoid things that have been processed on equipment or in facilities that also process nuts (and we avoid ALL nuts).  I will be making her birthday cake this year because baked goods are the biggest offenders of (possible) nut contamination, but that's no big deal.  I've tried soybutter and sunbutter and DD wasn't a fan of either.  But really, she can't miss what she never had, so it's no big deal.

  • We found out DS1 was allergic to nuts when he was about 18 months.  We avoided all nuts and anything processed at a plant with nuts.  The hardest part for me was big family gatherings, potlucks, and friends' birthday parties.  I never knew if/what he could eat.  I usually brought him some food and only let him eat fresh fruit or chips still in the bag if I could read the label.  I would always bring oreo cookies since he couldn't have birthday cake.  It was sometimes hard, but also easier than avoiding foods for my youngest who has a dairy sensitivity /possible allergy.  The nut allergy is scarier to me than the dairy one though because the reactions can be so much more severe.  The good news is that there is a percentage of kids who outgrow it.   DS1 is 6 years old and just recently was retested (they did a blood, skin, and oral test) and is no longer allergic!
