Not into teething toys... Other ideas?

Anna is definitely teething, but she isn't one of those kids that puts everything in her mouth. In fact, she doesn't put much of anything in her mouth except her hands and food (and only if she is really hungry). This is usually good, but I wish I could find something to help with the teething discomfort. I give her a teething ring and she just plays with it, even if i try to put it in her mouth. All she wants to chew on is her hands or my face.... Anyone have a baby with the same habits? Any ideas for other chewy/teething things to try?

  • Have you tried a Sophie? Everyone that I know who has one loves it. We have ours waiting in the closet.

  • Ditto Sophie.  I was totally anti-sophie b/c it costs so much but my girls love it.  So much in fact that I just ordered another one so there isn't fighting over the first one!

I tried the cold gel teethers and they don't seem to like them.  Sometimes they mouth burp cloths or bibs too.

  • Gabrielle would mildly respond to teething toys, but ultimately, she chose on of her stuffed animals.  She would also take a wet washcloth and use that, too.

  • DD was the exact same way. She didn't put anything in her mouth (it worked to our advantage except when she was teething!) I found that putting an apple in her mesh feeder was helpful (messy, but helpful :) ) I had to hold it for a bit, but she eventually got the hang of it. She wouldn't do it for awhile, but it did help a bit. I also ended up giving her more motrin than I would have liked because she just wouldn't chew on anything.

Hope your little girl is feeling better soon... teething is no fun for baby or for mama!

  • Sophie and this ring of beads were always Jake's go to teething items. They have the bead teether at BRU too.

  • I've been trying to come up with an idea for you, but it all seems like teething toys. One thing that Will likes is sort of food-like. We put frozen banana (or other fruit) chunks in a mesh feeder. Tasty and cold!

Is she getting her first tooth? Or does she already have a few?

  • What about the mesh feeder?  People have told me frozen fruit in those works well.  Daniel was too little for that and didn't like teething toys either.  I usually rubbed his gum with my finger and let him gnaw on it if he wanted to.  When the pain was really bad though, the last thing he wanted to do was bite down.
