I really want to start cloth diapering with our soon to arrive second child, however my husband wants to wait until we no longer live in an apartment (we plan on having 3 more children after this one so it isn't like I'm going to miss cloth diapering period but I think financially it could help). He thinks it won't be much cheaper since we are paying $2.75 (total price for washing and drying) per load of laundry, and bulk boxes of disposable diapers are only $16 for about 164 size 1 luvs diapers. Which lasted for 3 weeks with our son.
I want to know if anyone is using CD's while having to use a laundry mat, how often you wash and if you think you are still saving money including the start out price to buy the diapers. His main concern is how difficult it will be to buy the diapers as we are already extremely tight financially, we can afford buying a little at a time with disposables but it will really be hard finding the bulk money to buy all the cloth diapers needed to start.
Re: CD in an apartment...
I started washing at a laundromat a couple weeks ago. I've found this works really well:
I do my rinse/soak every evening at home in a sink. I hang to dry, and once they are only a bit damp I put them in the wetbag.
I wash every fourth day and I do a hot wash/extra rinse. It's only one cycle and costs me $2.50 at our laundromat.
Hang dry at home.
Total Cost: approx. $17.50/month
But cost isn't the only reason I CD. I like the fact that there are no chemicals next to Joy's genitalia or in the landfill.
