DH and I are planning on Thirsties covers and prefolds for the majority of our cloth diapering. I was planning on getting 4 XS covers (5-12lbs) for our little girl and then 5-6 Thirsties Duo wraps size 1 (6-18lbs). I like the Thirsties because that is what I have used when watching several friend children. Is 4 XS covers going to be enough with the Duo wraps. I want to try both the Duo wraps and the fitted covers to see which we like better. We have 36 hemp prefold diapers in the smaller size (6-18lbs). I have also ordered some regular sposies size 1 for immediately after birth to help with the first few days of transition to being parents. Any other suggestions to be sure I have a decent stash?
Re: How many XS Thirsties covers?
I bought 4 & 6 BG AIO. I have a ton of PFs like you. I need to do laundry every other day. The covers do get pooed on & to make them last for a few changes I am forced to wipe them down. I wish I had 6. They are really so great that I wish I only did covers & pre-folds for NB.
Personally I would buy 6, I am buying 2 more. You could wait till LO comes to see. XS is not that small & they just fit our 6lb 14oz little Mr. He should make it too 6 months in them! I am so happy with them, they never leak, they are beautiful colors & so cute!!
EDIT- do not buy sposies. Size 1 will be too big, you'll need newborn. The hospital will give you some newborn diapers (take them). We left with about 40.
I think the 4 XS covers are going to be overkill with 5-6 Duos. You really only need 6 covers max during the newborn stage. I personally had 9 (I got some for $2-$3) and had to force myself to use them at least once.
I'm not sure how well the hemp prefolds are going to work during the newborn stage, if only because I have heard they are hard to Snappi. If you aren't going to Snappi, you probably will go through more covers with newborn poop, so maybe you will need 10 after all... I love my hemp prefolds for inserts, but I never used them as actual prefolds.
I am having a homebirth, so I I will not be getting any hospital freebies! I have a package of 7th Gen NB and a few packages of 7th Gen Size 1 for our new baby adjustment phase and for cord care, etc. I was an 8lb baby and DH was a 10lb baby so we expect a fairly big baby! I can always return the size 1 if we don't use them or donate them to the local women's shelter.
Jealous of your home-birth!! I wish I had one, although I only spent 30 mins of my labor in the hospital... I put off going until I almost had the baby in DHs car
You never know what your baby will be. I was 8 & DH just shy of 10 as well. DS... a skinny chicken baby!!
