Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Air Travel Tips

We last flew with DD when she was 3 months old. Things will certainly be different on this trip since we can't bank on her sleeping for 5 hours straight and that she's not just on BM anymore. I'm a little scared!

Two questions:

1) Going through TSA - the website says a 'reasonable' amount of food and drink is allowed over the normal  3 oz allowed. I want to bring 2 sippies of milk for the travel day plus some Horizon milk boxes (sealed) for later in the trip. Plus some food. Do you think that's reasonable? I guess if it gets taken away we'll just buy as we go.

2) Toys for the flight - We got her a seat so she should be comfortable. I bought some new colorful books for her to look at/read. But what toys are a good idea? Everything I can think of has too many  pieces or makes too much noise. Maybe a coloring book and a few crayons?

Re: Air Travel Tips

  • I have brought lots of milk on a plane and no one every says anything. I just let them know a cooler with milk is going through the xray machine & use the family & medical liquids lane at security. I have flown with over 150 oz of BM. I always fly with a cooler full of food (with an ice pak) and never have a problem.

My LO is really into books so I try to have a new book (or toy of whatever your LO is into) on the plane. I found that new stuff holds their attention longer.

     good luck.

  • We brought some little containers of gerber juice, its in a small container and you just add water, nutrigrain bars and other small foods he could eat. And as for food. Every TSA agent we came across had a different idea of the "appropriate" amount of food. Just take your chances and see what happens. GL!!!!

  • I usually have 1 full sippy cup of water and 1 sealed additional drink (yogurt drink, juice box, etc.) and have never had a problem going through security. Anything beyond that, I have usually put in checked luggage (like pedialyte and gatorade when we've traveled internationally). I've never had anyone question the amount of food we've had at all. For long flights, I usually have at least 2 or 3 tupperware containers of food plus bags and bags of snacks.

I bought DD a doodler (I think this is the name?) for a long flight when she was around 19 or 20 months old and that was a good toy. It has its own little stylus, so that can't get lost and the fact that she could erase and keep drawing over provided a long period of entertainment.  DD is really big on imaginative play, so having her doll and pretend food/diapers/etc. also provides a lot of activity in-flight.
