Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Another rash question plus sores in the mouth...help!

DS had his 12 month vacc 10 days ago.  On day 7 he showed spots on his face and had super red cheeks.  This morning I notice a sore in his mouth with the white top on it so I thought he was developing thrush.  He has gotten more white topped bumps in his mouth today and has been super fussy.  Now tonight at bath time I took off his shirt and saw that he is covered in small red spots mostly on his upper body.

I gave him peanut butter today - he has had it before with no problems.  I don't know if this is an allergy, vacc reaction, thrush, chicken pox, a combination.  Does anyone have any insight or suggestions?  TIA I am so worried!

  • Not sure about the spots in his mouth (they almost sound like canker sores), but my DD had red spots all over her about 12 days after her 12 month shots too. They went away after a day or 2. I never looked in her mouth so not sure about that part...

  • My pedi said that a rash was common 7-10 days after getting the chicken pox vaccine.  But my DD never had one (a rash, that is), and I have no idea about the sores in his mouth.  I would doubt it's related to peanut butter since you said he's had that before.  I'd call your pedi in the morning if DS still has the rash. • Could it be hand, foot, & mouth disease?  Hope your LO feels better!

  • i would be concerned about chicken pox, I had them in my mouth when i was younger,

or hand foot and mouth disease. DD had hfmd for 3 weeks and had a super high fever and was fussy, and she has sores in her mouth - making her not want to eat or drink.

i would call the doc tomorrow. :)

  • By the way, you might want to call pedi in case it is an allergic reaction.  You wouldn't want it to get worse during the night.

  • I'd call the pedi tomorrow and see if you can talk to the nurseline.  Did your LO have any fruit or something acidic that could cause some canker sores in his mouth?  Does he act like it is painful?  How about a temp?

  • Go to your Pedi. It sounds like a reaction.  DD got Thrush and a yeast infection right after her vaccines. She had a fever too.

This.  My son got it but it stayed in his mouth.  Doc did warn us it could/probably would spread to other parts of his body.  It was horrible when he got it but the doc told us to mix benedryl and an antacid and just use a qtip to dab the spots in his mouth (if he'd been old enough we could've had him 'swish' the mixture around and spit.  Hope your LO feels better soon- I think my son had it for about a week- I can't remember, sorry!
