sex before internal exams?

Later this week I want to start having daily sex to try to induce labor naturally.  I know they've heard it all, but I was embarassed to ask my OB whether it was OK to do it the day of or day before an external exam.  I know you're not supposed to do it before pelvic exams/pap smears, but would it matter before a cervical check?

Re: sex before internal exams?

  • I never had an office visit internal exam because I delivered the day that I was to have my first one.  However, I can't imagine why it would matter if you had.  The reason that you aren't supposed to before a pap is because semen can mess with the test results.  For a prenatal internal exam they are checking for dilation and effacement... both tests are done with fingers, not lab equipment.

  • I would say go for it.  I've heard of women who are laboring in the hospital, and they want to get things going faster the natural way, so the staff gives them some privacy and they go at it right in the delivery room.  It won't mess up the cervical check at all.  I have a feeling all of us on this board who still have inside babies are having a lot of sex right now.  Big Smile

  • I wouldn't do it like, right before you leave for the doc, but the night before... absolutely!

Now if only I could convince my H to have sex.....

  • DH and I have been having a lot of sex lately (thank God, lol) and my doc has never had an issue with it. I've only had two cervical checks, one at 36 and one at 38, and I am pretty sure we'd had sex the night before my 38 week check. It wasn't a problem.

  • Ok, thanks ladies!  I asked my OB if, in her opinion, any of the natural induction methods worked and she recommended sex.  So, I guess she shouldn't have too much of a problem with it. Big Smile

  • Also with the cervical checks they don't open you up and look in.  My Dr just uses his hand, which he lubricates before he inserts it.  So honestly, I'm not really sure how they'd even know you had sex...unless like someone else said you JUST had sex moments before the exam.
