Success after IF

NSAIFR: Anyone live near/in Milwaukee?

We are considering moving there for DH's job -

Do you like it there? Anything I should know? DH loved it when he visited - but we've never lived anywhere colder or snowier than Boston and we didn't have DD then either.....We are thinking of living as close in to the city as possible...He's a native Californian and I grew up on the East Coast (NY, NJ and FL)....we live in TX now and don't really like it much

also - I hate driving under good weather conditions so I think I will absolutely not be able to drive in the winter in WI Embarrassed

  • We live just north of Milwaukee and love it...but we've lived here our entire lives.  You can find some great suburbs of Milwaukee less than 20-25 minutes away.  You get used to the winters and they aren't really that horrible.  You have a few big snow storms, but the snow sticks around.  There are actually a bunch of us from the Milwaukee area.

  • i live in chicago but my SIL lives in milwaukee and i think it's nice. i think (but i may be wrong on this) that the schools aren't great in milwaukee proper, but there are plenty of suburbs with great schools.

  • That is true about the schools, MPS (Milwaukee Public Schools) aren't so fabulous in some cases.  We live in Ozaukee County and our schools are great.

  • we are thinking of renting a 2-2 apt/condo in the city for a year or so until we know the area - the potential job is in the city and we really didn't like living in the burbs in tx - it might just be tx though.....

any suggestions as to where to live? we want to be close to the school of engineering (that is where the potential job is)

but really we want to live in a place with lots of young, highly educated professionals with families so we can make friends and have a community and close to shopping and stuff to do for little kids - we feel very isolated right now because we just don't fit in where we live.....and I hate to drive so I don't get out a lot (not much to do close by and no public transportation)....

  • We live in the what is called the North Shore suburbs of Milwaukee, its about a 10-15 min drive to MSOE from our house. The schools here are some of the best in the state.

We love it here. The winters aren't too terrible (I say that while we have mounds of snow outside that are as tall as I am!), and you get used to them. There is a lot to do in the city and people are quite friendly.

I know a few people who work at MSOE, from what I hear its a good place to work.

  • I've lived in the north shore of Milwaukee almost my entire life and you could not find a nicer area to live. We currently live in Whitefish Bay. I also prefer urban living and would suggest you look at whitefish bay or shorewood. These are old suburbs with lots of unique architecture. Excellent schools, not too suburban feeling, 15 minutes from downtown and you are right on lake Michigan.

  • I actually live in the City of Milwaukee and have my entire life so obviously I love it.  I wanted an urban neighborhood with young families and away from what I like to call "symmetry-ville" where all the houses are beige and look alike.

If your husband is going to be working at MSOE you could look at places in the Third-Ward where there are lots of condos.  It is an area with lots of young professionals but I'm not sure how many have children.  That area has lots of restaurants and fun shops and is right outside of downtown so you're close to everything.

The east side is a younger, hipper area as well with lots of apartments and duplexes.

It's true that the Milwaukee Public schools aren't very good so if you are going to live in the city you would probably want to factor in sending your child to a private school or take some time to research some of the charter schools.

What I think the best thing about Milwaukee is that it's a big yet small city.  The traffic is never horrible and you can basically get wherever you need to be in 20 minutes.  We have major league baseball, nba basketball, minor league hockey, indoor soccer, ballet, opera, a symphony, good shopping, good restaurants and obviously, great beer and cheese.  And, although the snow and cold can get somewhat annoying having four distinct seasons is nice.  You can't really appreciate summer if you haven't had a real winter.

    Good luck with your decision.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
