Teachers and Pumping

Teachers, how and where do you get the time/privacy to pump at work? I don't pump now and have been really uncomfortable all day.  I also have to supplement with formula b/c I don't have enough milk.  I just feel like I don't have enough privacy in my room and that I would be disturbed by students/other teachers knocking on my classroom door during my lunch.  Any suggestions or ideas?  PS:  I am a special area teacher, so there is always someone knocking on my door asking for something. Thanks for the help.

Re: Teachers and Pumping

  • Can you just put a sign on your door, saying "Come back in 15 minutes" or something like that?

  • I'm returning to work on the 20th. I will be pumping in my classroom. I'm going to turn off the lights in my room so that it looks like I'm not in there and I'll lock my door.

?If I still have people knocking, I will probably post a sign saying Mrs. B will be back at 11:30.??

  • I'm not back to work yet, but I am planning to pump on my lunch break.  I am an Intervention Specialist, so since I work with other teachers I'll just give myself a 15 minute break in the mornings to go pump.  I don't know if admin. will like that but I am doing it.  I share a room too, so I'll have to go somewhere else to pump.  One of my close teacher friends has an office area in her room, so I might go in there or I'll find a closet or something.  Maybe you could put a sign on the door telling people that you're busy and the time that you will be free.

I've had to supplement too, and I have worked so hard to try to keep up my supply and not quit BFing all together that I am not going to let work get in the way of this.  :)

  • I pump twice while I am here at work teaching.  I pump during one of my plan periods and the last part of my lunch.  I pump in my coworker and my storage closet and she and I are the only ones who ever go in there (students aren't allowed).  I have a book case as a partition and it works out pretty well.

Could you put a sign on your door....something discreet "Do not disturb?"

  • See, I am glad I posted!  The sign is a good idea.  That would discourage people from lingering outside my door.  I could ask administration if I could cover the window on my door during my "private time".  See, we aren't allowed to cover that space, but if I explained why I would hope they would understand. It takes me awhile to pump, at least 25- 30min, which is my lunch period, if I am lucky to get the full time.  Maybe, I will just remind myself to not stress and to try to relax.  Do you guys fear having a fire drill or Code C during your pumping sessions?!

I didn't but I do now!!  I'm not sure how I'm going to fit a pumping session in when I go back to work.  My schedule isn't ideal for it.
