NTR - Miracle Cure For Sour Towels?

I forgot my towels in the washer once last fall and despite washing the heck out of them, using that Oxyclean stuff, trying color safe bleach and washing them in the hottest water I have they still smell sour after one use.

Anyone have a miracle cure? DH are big believers in having few things but that those things should be nice so we only own four bath towels but they are super fabulous (except for the whole smelling thing).

  • You might try vinegar.  If that fails, I recommend new towels.

  • Did you soak your towels in OxyClean for a couple of days?  I have only found that OxyClean works when soaked for a few days and that has done the trick for us.  Good luck!

  •  I am having the same problem- our towels smell moldy once they get wet after we shower.

What I have found online suggests a cup of distilled white vinegar in the rinse cycle, washing on hot and making sure they are totally dry when you take them out of the dryer. You can also try hanging them in the sun to dry but not sure how much sun you have in you area this time of year!

I have also read that mold/mildew buildup in front loaders can cause this and there is a machine cleaner that a few sites recommended but I don't remember the name of it.

  • We dealt with this forever and I decided to start using the "sanitize" cycle on my front loader with oxyclean. It's a really hot cycle and 2 rinses. I do this to all my towels and washcloths once a week and the smell has never returned.

  • I have a problem w/ a smelly washer and bought this...they have a formula for towels.  I have not used it yet, but it is money back guaranteed and came highly recommended:

  • I recommend trying vinegar as well. I put it where you would put the detergent, and nothing else.
  • I put baking soda in addition to detergent when I wash towels and I wash them on the sanitize cycle.

  • If your climate allows, leave your towels out in the sun all day.  The sun kills the bacteria and the smell.  We do this with our cloth diapers and it works wonders.
