Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Naps | 20-24 month olds

Does your LO still take naps?  If so, for how long?

If not, when did he/she stop taking naps completely?

DD used to nap well up until last week, she refuses to nap.  She starts crying as soon as we lay her down in her crib.  She used to nap up to 2.5 hrs and now, nothing! I'm thinking she's still a little young to drop naps completely.

Re: Naps | 20-24 month olds

  • I agree with you, she is a little young to drop all naps. DD still takes 1 nap per day & it's an hour to an hour and a half.  She wakes up about 7 or 8 and goes down for her nap at 11.  It seems to me that her nap is too early & the rest of the 8 hours she is awake are a long stretch but she is tired at 11 and 99.9% of the time she doesn't fuss at all. • DS still takes a midday nap.  Goes down around 1:00 and sleeps anywhere from 1.25 hours to 3.  Usually 1.25 though...

  • Yeah, I don't know why she fights it.  She use to go down without a sound, we'd lay her down and she'd fall asleep. Now I can't even say the word "nap" because she'll start to cry!
  • DS goes down for a nap around 2pm, and sleeps 2-3 hours.

  • DS goes down right before 1:00 and naps for at least 2 hrs.
  • Maybe is it the crib?  DS started fighting bedtime until we moved him to a full size bed.  Now he goes up to bed on his own!  He naps from 1-4 each day.

  • DD takes a nap at about 1:00 and it lasts about 1 1/2 hours sometimes at daycare she takes a 2 hour nap (she's up about 6/630 and goes to bed about 8). DD used to fight naps a while ago on the weekends but I think that was because we were home with her and she wanted to be with us and play.

I was thinking that at first, but she sleeps well through the night.  She also doesn't fight it, she goes down pretty smooth at night.

  • That does seem very young to be dropping naps completely. DS will be 20 months soon and he still takes 2-3 hour naps. I would keep putting her down everyday so she knows she can't get out of taking them.
  • we had a 2wk period of nap strike a month ago, right at your DD's age.  it's over now thank god, i was not ready to let them go!  his usual nap is 12-145.  it's almost like clockwork.  today he slept til 12-245 and it was heaven!

Did you continue putting him down daily for a nap?

She's napping on the couch right now as we speak!  I get the feeling she's scared because when I try and lay her down, she starts asking for Daddy, then she'll ask for my oldest daughter with this frantic look.  I just don't get why she doesn't act that way at night? You'd think she'd be more afraid when it's dark.

  • DD stopped taking her naps right after she recovered from her heart surgery last year. This was a couple of weeks after her first bday. I've had her on a consistent schedule for the last few months. She goes down at 7:30pm and sleeps till about 7am. Sometimes she wakes up around 5am but she eventually puts herself back down. She is a ball of energy my DD.

  • DD wakes up at 6-630 then goes down for her nap at 10 and gets up at 12-1230 sometimes she will only go down for an hour. We had about a week where she wouldnt go down for her nap and I had to sit next to her bed and rub her back until she fell asleep. We found that DD would not sleep in her crib anymore at 18 months. She hated it. A toddler bed made nap and bed time more fun I guess for her.

  • DD takes 1 nap a day between 1-2 hours each time. Recently she began fighting it a bit more, and sometimes I have to stay in her room with her and rub her back for a few minutes (and make sure I don't pick her up out of her crib) until she calms down and then she'll sleep. I agree, I think this is too young to be without naps (my 5 year old nephew still naps every day)....I am not sure when naps get dropped altogether, but maybe kindergarten or first grade when they don't get to nap at school all day? GL to you!

  • My DD is a little younger than yours, but we're having the same issue. She sleeps fine at night but she absolutely refuses to take naps during the day. She screams, cries, and throws everything out of her crib until DH or I go to get her. I talked to my pedi about it and she said kids should be taking a nap until they are 4 years old. She strongly suggested getting into a routine that we follow everyday; same time, same place, same nap routine everyday. We're still working on it but I'm hopeful that naps will get better.

  • There are days when my guys take 2 naps but more often than not they take one around 11am.  They wake up around 7am so I have been slowly moving it later.  I was hoping to get it to an early afternoon time but I don't know if they can make it that long.  They are exhausted in the morning.

I agree that it seems to early to be down to no nap.  Is she cranky during the day?

sorry, just getting back on now.  yes, we still tried everyday.  some days he's crash for 20 min or so then be up babbling again, other days he just screamed and we'd give up after 30min.  good luck!
