Success after IF

If you had the chance would you?

If you had the chance to pick up and move to another state would you do?

DH could move up in the company (it was recently bought out) and there are two openings out of state. One is Florida and the other in Texas. DH is really interested in Florida one but it is temp postions. His company would pay for us to live down there (pay for it ALL) and we would just keep our house in NJ. THe job could be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on the work load.

Honestly, if it weren't for my parents being up here I would say do it. My father is almost 80 and I fear that if I move something will happen!

Re: If you had the chance would you?

  • I would move if I could. My family is 400 miles away and I would move closer to them if I could. However in your situation, I would weigh the positives vs. the negatives especially if it is a temp job. However I would consider moving to Florida due to the cold right now. LOL!

  • I would think harder about it if it WEREN'T Florida or Texas.  I just don't do so well in the heat (summers!).

But I say go for it, it's an adventure!  A free one too!

  • We are actually considering a move out of state, so DH and I would jump on this opportunity!! However, my mom is unfortunately no longer here and I'm not close with my father, so we don't have that (and DH's family lives out of state anyway).

It might be worth considering, especially since your kids are still young enough to make a move like this (that could be a temporary one)

  • As I sit in 5 feet of snow... TOTALLY! H wouldn't do it though for reasons similar to yours. Plus, I would not want to do it on a temp bases, I hate moving, so I am long term.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • Depends on the circumstances, state and how close we would be to family/friends. In most cases, we would not move. We'd be under water with mortgages (we have a rental that we'd have to sell, plus our house). It would have to be an UNBELIEVABLE opportunity for us to move.

  • If you ask me in the middle of winter (especially this crap one we are having!), I would say yes! I always tell DH that I want to move some place warmer.

But, the reality is all of our family is here.

Right now, with the ages of our kids, we probably wouldn't move because I couldn't do this without family help. But, once are kids are older, I would move in a heartbeat......and I will definitely move once they are all in college and/or beyond because I cannot stand these winters! Is so depressing!

  • Where in Florida??! I am in the suburbs of Fort Lauderdale..

But to answer your question. Yes, we did pick up and move from MA to Fla. IT was one of the hardest things I have done in my life but now looking back I wouldn't change it at ALL!  I did not have children at the time, which made the move (meeting people) hard in the beginning.

Also, I know this is obvious but the weather, honeslty you can't beat it. It is lovely here almost all year round. I don't think I could ever move back north.  The summers do get hot (but if you have your house in NJ you can go home for some of the summer that's what Jake and I are doing!) and we do have hurricane season, but so far it hasn't been that bad.

I would say go for it! And it's really not that bad of flight. From NJ it's 3hoursish and Jet Blue flys direct out of Fort Lauderdale Inter..which is a great easy airport!

  • I would - I was always the type to stay put but we are finding the best way to move up in your career is to move, meet as many contacts and gain as many experiences as possible - I would do it when the kids are young - btw my parents and I used to live in flemington and we moved to fl when I was 11 - they still live near ft lauderdale and love it - it's also a good state to live in if you have little kids - lots to do

  • I'm originally from MO so I did.  I would move out of NJ in a heartbeat (sorry haha).  I actually want to move to TX.

    Good luck with the decision.

  • I would...if it means a promotion and all expenses paid I think it would be worth it especially since it could/would be a temporary position.
  • Not unless my whole family came with me :) We live 15 minutes away from all sets of our parents and both sets of DH's grandparents.

  • i'd absolutely think about it...it would really depend on the state...florida yes, texas no...out west, yes, actual east coast, yes...middle..no, unless it was like chicago or denver.
  • Yeah it is a hard decision to make.

job in florida is in the ocala area which is where my two cousins live.

In texas it is in Deer Park and from my understanding that is the Houston area.

Honestly, Texas is not option for me, way to far from everyone in my family.

  • OMG it is making me sick looking at house down there! I can get a 6 bedroom house with 3 car garage for less than I paid for my 4 bedroom 1 car garage in NJ!

  • Yup, but that's part of being a military family! We move, on average, every 11 months! If we had to do the packing and the moving, I would be less than eager for each move, but, since the military pays for movers. . . I really like the adventure and meeting new people. It is difficult to be away from family, but, for the most part, I have not lived near them any way. It is easier when DH is stationed east of the Mississippi. Good luck with your decision!
