XP: Baby Photos

Hey Girls!

Hope that you girls don't mind me posting here.

I love taking photos. One of my friends just had a baby about three weeks ago and has asked if I would take photos..just for fun. I told her that I would love to give it a try and see how things turn out. I'm really excited!

Anyways, since so many of you moms got pro photos done for your LOs, do you have any tips? Notice anything that they did that you wouldn't never thought of before?

I am planning to take a space heater (to keep the room warm for naked baby pics), fabric for baby to lie on/have as background, maybe some props (basket, etc).

Did the photogs use like a bean bag chair to set up the kiddos in certain positions?

Any other suggestions would be super helpful!

TIA :)

Re: XP: Baby Photos

  • oh fun!  My photographer used a boppy pillow and covered it with a blanket.  It worked perfect for keeping the baby's head propped up when she was laying on her tummy (like in my siggy pic). She also did a few with her laying on her back kind of laying in the hole of the boppy.

We also laid a heating pad down to warm up the area LO was going to be laying in (and then picked it up before we actually laid her down).  Also expect her LO to pee & even poop.  At least my LO did christen a few of our props and blankets during those naked shots!

    Good luck!

  • I highly recommend a beanbag chair.  I wouldn't have thought of it, but our newborn photog used one and it was great because you can position it any way that you need to..  Just drape it with a soft, fuzzy fabric, and you're all set!

  • You can definitely do a great job of them yourself! DH did our newborn photos and the shots turned out amazingly... it's all in the edits. He's done them for some friends since, too. He uses a big beanbag and had extra pillows on hand to prop baby up into the poses. Sometimes mom can help hold baby from behind as well. There's a lot of how-tos online to show you tricks for positioning. And don't forget the pee pad for the naked shots! GL!

  • Our photog used a bean bag type chair covered with white minky dot fleece for most of her pics. The studio was kept very warm and we spent several hours getting Libby to finally fall asleep so she could be posed any which way. Here are our pics.

As for props, hats, baskets, a cute upholstered chair or trunk, etc. all look cute Google Newborn Portraits for cute ideas or check out Etsy.

  • ditto the beanbag....what our photog did was drape layers of blankets on in various colors/textures on the beanbag. that way when she was done with one layer (or it got pooped or peed on) she just lifted it off and used the next one under it.  it's a nice time saver.  occasionally she'd have me hold the back of the blanket up and behind her to serve as a back drop for certain angles.

we spent lots of time trying to get her sleepy and posed but in the end i think a lot of the open eyed shots were my favorite, so don't stress it trying to get the baby to be asleep.  some will pose easily for you for those classic pics but some won't no matter what you do/try.  you just have to go w/the flow.

space heater was a must and if mama nurses then nursing can sometimes help put them in a milk coma too :)

tons of cute props and hats on etsy!

my photog. has tons of cute pics on her blog - check it out!

  • I think you'll do an amazing job!  I don't think it was mentioned above but in addition to or as a just in case you can bring a heating pad.  My photog had one that was used to warm the area a bit before we put LO down, it worked well.
