Success after IF

Should I be offering DD water in a bottle?

I haven't given her water yet - should I? I have sippies with valves that are too hard to use but will get some nuk ones - can I give her water in a bottle? I just feel like she doesn't get enough liquids - she isn't the greatest nurser and usually refuses formula - she is six months - how much should I give her daily?

Re: Should I be offering DD water in a bottle?

  • My pedi said no water from bottles...sippy cups only.  They really don't need water...their fluid intake should come from BM or formula.

I started the sippy, with water, at meals only, when Caroline was 6 months old...it is just for practice at that point.

  • I introduced water to Stella at meals in a Nuby sippy cup when she was 6 months old.  It took some time for her to really get it, but it was a great way to start.

  • It should be offered during solids meals, but they don't need it because they get all they need from BM or formula. Too much water can cause toxicity.

  • I would be more concerned at rather or not she is getting enough formula or BM. That is where all their nutrients come from at this point and the solids are more for practice now.

I was told FF babies need some water when eating solids. I give it to DD in a sippy cup after her solid meals. You definitely don't want her to fill up on water, but a little is good. I think water is OK for BF babies too, they just don't need as much.

They make great transition sippy cups with soft nipples, more like a bottle.
