What to do with infant car seat...?

(Can you tell I'm on a cleaning/purging spree?)

One of our infant seats was used for two kiddos (purchased in 2008 for Ava) and is starting to show some wear -- I'll pitch that one.  The other one was purchased new last Spring, probably used less than most since we don't really take the babies many places.  It is is excellent condition, and obviously has never been in any sort of accident.  I'm not looking to get any money for it, but what can I do with it?  I'm thinking that Salvation Army won't take it since they can't verify that it is safe...?

Also, I have an extra car seat base -- what can I do with that?

TIA!

  • I know Babies R Us is having a thing where if you bring in an old baby carseat, swing, etc that you get 25% off another one (maybe a bigger carseat for them?).  I guess that could be one option....

  • I am not exactly sure how to get the car seat stuff off your hands, but I just wanted to let you know that while the Salvation Army does plenty of good, they are also an anti-gay organization.

One of many articles I found by googling:

    https://sfappeal.com/alley/2009/12/so-you-are-in-the.php

And they do not approve of Harry Potter:

Sorry my links aren't clicky, I'm on a Mac.

Not sure if this is something that concerns you, but I will not support a charity that will not recognize homosexuality as a basic human right.

Leslie, I had no idea.  I donate to them because my grandmother always did, and they are so close to us/convenient.  This definitely makes me second guess that.  :(

  • I used to work at shelter that housed homeless women who were pregnant or just had a baby. I know that we were not allowed to take used car seats. You may have a hard time with that.

I just did the BRU trade in last weekend and it was SO WORTH IT! I traded in Brady's stroller and got much better single stroller and really old worn to hell double stroller and got a new double. I ended up getting the single stroller basically for free because I had BRU rewards and BRU CC rewards on top of the % off. You can trade in any baby gear and use it towards purchase of new item. Did you ever end up getting the girls new car seats or the double stroller? If so I would really recommend doing this!

Thanks, Daria!  I've been thinking about BRU, but we did get the car seats already, and they don't sell the stroller we want in the store.  :(  Hmm...

  • Pretty much no charity I know of will take them.

You can try Craig's List or Free Cycle, or just post it on your local board to find someone who will take it.

  • And FWIW, here is another perspective on the Salvation Army that might help...

Which stroller is that you want? You can always go in ask if they will let you order the stroller with them from online and have it shipped to store. I know the store I go to will do this. BRU has been pretty good to me, I think maybe because we spend so much  money in there. Doesn't hurt to try.

  • I know I took Hayden's old carseat and base to our local resale shop. THey told me that they couldn't sell it but that they did donate them to people who couldn't afford to buy them. I dont' know if you have a local resale shop that does that.

  • I am late on this, but I would probably bring it to a fitting station (or police/fire station) and ask them to have both seats destroyed.  Unless you have someone close to you who will use it (and it has definitely never been in an accident), then no charity or resale shop can take it because of the liability.

I know most states should have a program that provides low or no cost seats to families that can't afford them.  No family should have to use a used seat with an unknown history.

Same with the base.  It sucks, I know, but that's really the best thing to do!

I'm hoping with mine that I can do the trade-in thing at BRU for the next seat up for DD, or maybe to go toward a shower gift or something for a friend.
