Toys, what to get rid of and what to put away - WWYD

I know that most of the people here have younger kids than mine but opinions still wanted. Seriously, my kids have waaay too many toys, I do not think that it is more than most people these days but it is too much for them and way too much for our house which does not have a basement and is "only" 3 bedroom. I am trying to purge toys b/c they are not playing with half of the stuff they like let alone the things they are not intereste in. So, trying to figure out what I should keep and what I should get rid of.

DS got a Imaginext Castle/Dungeon a year ago and never plays with it, the age is something like 4-8 so there is still time for him to like it but at this point he would rather play with the dollhouse than something so boyish, I think he finds it scary.

The other thing is we have a Geotrax Grand Central Station train set and a GeoAir airplane set and they are not played with. I set them up the other day and the kids played with it a little bit but now we are stepping over them. Those are both remote controlled toys. Oh and DS has Thomas wooden trains and does not play with them either but I will not get rid of those yet. And he has an electronic Thomas set that my step-daughter got him for Christmas that has never been used but I cannot get rid of that obviously since it is the only present that SD has bought DS.

These are all bigger toys, I took apart the train set and it is in a bin (without the top so it cannot be stacked) but I am trying to decide if I should keep this stuff in the closet or get rid of them.

DS is mostly into art supplies, play kitchen and Melissa and Doug cutting food.
DD is mostly into her dolls and art supplies.

  • do you have an attic space or any storage area that you can put the toys away for a bit.  I rotate toys between the family room and the downstairs "playroom" which is never used as a playroom b/c dh fears the kids will run out the door.  I'd keep anything that looks like something a child a year or two older would enjoy...

honestly if it's a new gift, I'd leave it out for a bit... maybe dc just need time to figure them out.

I'm close to getting rid of ds' train set... he's just not playing with it... but we're about to move... so I may pack them up and only unpack a few toys at a time.
