DH and I are headed to Grand Cayman in December for 5-7 days. We will be taking our 4 1/2 month old son with us, and it's our first time there. On the plane, since it's a short flight from Boston, we will be holding him on our laps. I have a couple of questions about the logistics of traveling with such a young infant if any of you ladies have already done this!
1. We won't be renting a car most likely b/c we'll just want to chill out and relax on the beach, in the pool, etc...(We're thinking of staying at the Ritz.) We obviously won't have our car seat with us, so what do we do about the cab ride to and from the resort/airport? Do we just hold the baby on our laps in the cab?
2. We have a Peg Perego stroller, but I don't really want to bring that. (I'm definitely bringing my Baby Bjorn to carry him around in). Can anyone recommend a good travel stroller for a baby that young that isn't too expensive and has some shade from the sun so he can nap in it outside/on the beach/by the pool/etc...?
3. I'm looking for a good floatie for him in the ocean and pool...where should I look? What about a hat? And what has your pedi said about sunscreen before 6 months old?
4. Is a 4 1/2 month old able to sit up in highchairs? I'm clueless about that, and since we won't be bringing his carseat/carrier, I feel like this is the only option for restaurants.
Thanks so much for any help/advice...we were big travelers before our little guy came along, but this will be our first trip with him!
Re: Beach travel with 4 1/2 month old?
We went to NC when DS was 4 months old for a week and hung out on the ocean and at the pool.
1. The airline will let you check your infant seat for free.... do it. Our car seat doesn't need the base so it worked out nicely. I would use a car seat- cab drivers aren't the best at safety.
2. We used out Chicco Discovery stroller- but I also have a sun tent that fit in the suitcase and took apart the bouncer and packed that too... baby hung out in the bouncer or his travel swing while in the sun tent.
3. I found a float (shapped like a crab) that had a shade over it. It was at Target on clearance. But I'm in MI and it was seasonal. It was a blow up one.
4. Nope... Can't sit in a high chair yet... that's why I think you need your infant seat or your stroller.
the airline will check your stroller for free also... you check it at the gate right before you get on. Then it's the first thing off the plane. It really is super easy. It's gonna be hot- if I were your little guy I would not want to be held in the carrier the whole time.
