I just got back from my 16 week appointment and everything looks great! The baby had a nice, strong heartbeat and we will find out the sex on February 14th!!!
The doctor said that we had a choice of whether or not to do the quad screen. He said that I had until 20 weeks to decide, but at this point my DH and I decided to NOT have it. Has anyone else decided to not have it? If you have had it, what was your experience?
Re: 16 weeks appointment and quad screen...
This is my feeling exactly! We wouldn't terminate and I rdon't want to spend my pregnancy worrying about false positives!
Thanks!
Just another thing to think about . . . I wouldn't generalize that those of us that are doing the NT scan or additional testing are doing it to terminate if something is found.
For many people, it is about the information that is presented (and you don't get a positive result or a negative result- you get odds like 1 in 100, 1 in 10,000)- if I had a baby that might be born with special needs, I would want to start educating myself NOW, figure out our finances so that I could take an extended maternity leave, possibly go back to work on a reduced schedule, find support groups in my area, find a daycare or nanny that has experience dealing with any issues that may arise, find a pediatrician that also is well-versed, etc., etc., etc.
This. We did the NT scan and will do the quad screen as well.
I'm not doing quad screening because my doctor only offers it if there was a concern from 1st Tri/NT scan. Since ours came back normal, they just took blood for spina bifida test at my 16 week appointment and the nurse said no more blood work 'till 30 weeks.
ETA (after reading all the posts): We opted for the NT scan and would have done further genetic testing if necessary for preparedness. I wouldn't consider terminating for Downs Syndrome or another viable genetic disorder, however I'd want to know before the baby came so that we had resources lined up.
I completely agree. My dr. said that the quad screen put people into 3 groups. Those who would terminate, those who would want to know to be prepared and those who don't care and don't want to know ahead. Part of me puts myself into the second group and for all of your above points. Thanks for a good response!
This is how we feel about it too
^ This as well, I just posted about getting an amnio and awaiting the results, I already love this baby and could never terminate, but being able to be prepared(emotionally, financially, etc.) was paramount.

We talked with my dr. DH and I had decided that we would not do the amnio no matter the results as a follow up and my dr said if we werent' going to do that there was no reason to do the test. The only thing we would do it for would be for nueral tube defects and you can see a lot of those at the anatomy scan..
So basically No!
