breast feeding and formula supplementing

If you supplement your breast feeding routine with formula what type of formula do you use? Is there a kind/brand that was referred to you for any specific reason?

Re: breast feeding and formula supplementing

  • I keep some of the hershey single serving premixed bottles on hand.  They're great if I haven't pumped enough milk for his daycare or a babysitter, and we also bring them along if we're going to have him out for a long time but I won't be there to nurse him and we don't want to bring a little cooler for the breastmilk.

Honestly, I picked the formula because it was individually packaged and made by HERSHEY.  It was the only brand I had any personal experience with, and I've been pretty happy with their products in the past.  ;)

  • We had to start supplementing at 2.5 months old because I wasn't producing enough.  His pedi told us to use Enfamil Gentlease because it was partially broken down and easier for BF babies to digest.  I stopped BF completely at 4 months and we are still using this formula.

  • the hospital used enfamil lipil and sent some samples home with us, so we used those.  then we had some samples of the blue similac so i used that and DS didn't have any problem with the switch.  when we ran out of samples, i picked up some of the target generic formula, and still haven't had any issues.  the generics are basically the same thing, it's just half the price and you actually get a little more.  we lucked out.  DS is not picky at all.

  • We had a lot of BF issues for a while, and DD was getting about half breast milk, half formula. We started with regular Enfamil, but she had horrible gas so we switched to Enfamil Gentlease and that seemed to help. Now she only gets maybe 2 oz of formula a day, and we are still using the Gentlease b/c she does well with it.

  • We supplement with Natures One Baby's Only Organic Dairy Formula.  it was the only formula I found that does not line their can with BPA and doews not use the hexane, bleach, and acid method to extract the DHA and ARA.
