Significant Winter Storm: Monday ? Wednesday
Southern, Central, and Northern IN
A
significant winter storm is expected to move across the state starting
tonight through Wednesday. This strong system will bring rain, snow,
ice, and high winds throughout the state. Significant ice and snow
accumulations can be expected across central and northern Indiana. Winds
will also become strong Tuesday night through Wednesday. The
combination of ice, snow, and wind could result in widespread downed
trees and power lines. Below is a forecast for northern, central, and
southern Indiana for today and Tuesday.
Tonight- Round #1
Northern Indiana:
A mixture of sleet and snow will start to fall after the evening rush
hour and move northeast across the state. Total snowfall accumulation of
3-5? can be expected.
Central Indiana:
A mixture of freezing rain and sleet will begin to start falling around
7-8 pm this evening. At this time, it appears the precipitation will
fall mainly as freezing rain. Total accumulation will be around a tenth
to a quarter inch of ice by Tuesday morning.
Southern Indiana:
Freezing rain will be possible tonight, mainly between the hours of
midnight and 10:00am Tuesday. Total ice accumulation is expected to be
about one tenth of an inch. Temperatures will rise by midday Tuesday,
allowing conditions to improve greatly. Highs temperatures are
forecasted to be around 41 degrees.

The second round of winter weather will bring mostly snow, however;
snow may mix with freezing rain and sleet. The area concerned with the
mixture of freezing rain and sleet will be south of Highway 24. Minor
icing is possible. Counties in the extreme north will see the highest
amounts of snowfall, with 18-20? possible. During the afternoon hours,
sustained winds will be between 15-30 mph, with higher gusts possible.
With the combination of snow and winds, near blizzard conditions will be
possible.
Central: Areas in
central IN should expect ice and snow accumulations. Areas along the
I-70 corridor, and the cities north of I-70 (Terre Haute, Indianapolis,
Bloomington, New Castle, and Muncie) will experience a mixture of
freezing rain and sleet. Ice accumulation totals of 1.00? or greater
will be possible. Areas to the north of this line (Kokomo and Lafayette)
will see an all snow event. Heavy snow is expected, with totals
exceeding 12.00?. Winds will become strong out of the northeast at 15-30
mph, with gusts up to 45 mph.
Southern:
The areas in southern Indiana are not a concern at this time.
Temperatures will be well above freezing throughout the day. By
nightfall, temperatures will fall below freezing, and the precipitation
will change over to a mixture of rain and snow. Total snow accumulations
less than 1.00? is expected. Winds will be out of the northeast between
15-21 mph.
