My dr. suggested we start rice cereal, he said 2 tbls three times a day. Seems like a lot.
My questions:
What age did you start?
How much did you give and how frequently?
When did you give it, before or after bottle?
Did you reduce bottle amount around the cereal feeding?
Re: Poll-Rice cereal related questions
we just started giving it to him about 2 weeks ago, and we give him 1 tbl about 3 or 4 times a week. it's not a regular thing and he still mainly breastfeeds.
i give it to him before or with a bottle. usually i'll give him a few bites and then let him take a sip or two from the bottle. we feed on demand, so i haven't really noticed a reduction in his breast demand but i don't really watch it that often.
We haven't started yet, but our pedi gave us info on it. Your pedi's rec sounds like a lot!! Ours said you can start with 1-2 tablespoons once a day. Later on you can work up to twice a day.
Also, in the beginning, solids are not supposed to replace feedings. I know on wholesomebabyfood.com and other sources say to offer BM or formula first.
What age did you start? 4.5 months
How much did you give and how frequently? at night; I don't measure, I just put some in a bowl; if I'd have to guess I'd say we started somewhere near a tablespoon and now it may be around 2
When did you give it, before or after bottle? I give her some cereal then let her sip off the bottle then more cereal etc
Did you reduce bottle amount around the cereal feeding? no
That sounds like a lot!
What age did you start? A week before she hit 5 months
How much did you give and how frequently? 1tbsp of cereal w/4-5tbsp of formula (mixed it according to the directions on the box)
When did you give it, before or after bottle? After. Always feed a baby solids after their bottle. BM/Formula is where they get all their nutrients so that is more important than solids. Don't let them fill up on solids first or they won't get in all the BM/formula they need.
Did you reduce bottle amount around the cereal feeding? Very slighty, by only about 3oz. She was taking five 7oz bottles a day every 3.5-4 hours while awake, so 35oz and sleeping about 9 hours per night. We upped her bottles to 8oz to try and coax her into dropping a feeding so there was more time for feeding solids and it worked so now she's taking four 8oz bottles every 4-5 hours, one cereal + fruit feeding in the morning and one veggie feeding in the evening.
1) We started last week at almost 5 months
2) 2 tbls 1x a day
3) I breastfeed - we do cereal, bath, boob
4) no reduction in breastfeeding during the day or on purpose, but she now only wakes up twice a night to eat instead of three times!
