July 2011 Moms

how would you deal with this?

We are all thinking about being pregnant, blue or pink, babies, recovery and the first year. (well I am at least)

but then our babies will get bigger and go to school. My husband and I are both teachers. This story makes me very, very angry.

This 3 year old girl was suspended for one month, because of "potty training issues". I would have a fit and pull my kid from that school, never to go back again.

what would you do?

here's the article:

Re: how would you deal with this?

  • didnt read the article but... I would throw a FIT and bad mouth the school to everyone haha. Then I would do some serious potty training and put her in the best school in the area and send them an update of how great she is at the new school and the BIG donation I gave to the new school (even though i dont have the money for that). haha!

  • As crappy as it is there are many preschools that have requirements for potty training. The one I work for does not, but i've heard of others having them. We just have requirements for kids who are potty training, but expelling is not one of them. The only requirement is that if they are having too many accidents they need to be in a pull up and not underwear.

  •  I'm an early childhood person and when looking at daycares (especially ones that have decent preschool programs) I always ask if potty training is a requirement for the 3's class.  The GOOD school always (in my experience) say that they move at the readiness of the child.  So really, good.  Expel my kid for not being potty trained because you've just tipped me off that your school philosophy SUCKS.

  • nothing like kicking a 3 year old from school for having some acidents.  How do you explain to your kid why she can't go back to school and see her friends? Poor thing!  Every child develops at their own pace...that being said, why don't they put her in some Pull-ups before school so if she does have an accident it'll be easily taken care of?

  • This is bullsh*t.. I know I was still having accidents when I was 5 and in kindergarten, but was always a very bright child!! This place seems NUTS.

  • Okay, so I read the whole article, and really, I think it's a lot to expect of a 3 year old to be fully potty trained, but if I were the Rosso's, I don't think I'd have Zoe in preschool at all. Obviously she had more accidents in the preschool situation, and 3 is really young to be in a daily program. I'd say that her accidents tell me she's not ready for preschool.

The school really shouldn't be making such a big deal out of it, especially if she cleans up after herself, but having potty accidents can be stressful for kids, and I'd want to help my kid avoid that stress as much as possible, and if that means teaching at home for another year (3 is really, really young), then that's fine.

  • I think for age 3 that is too extreme.  I guess I could understand kindergarten, but at least give some kind of warning!  I don't see how one month is going to help a 3 year old child in any way.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I don't get the suspension thing... BUT, I can tell you, it sucks being on the teaching end of this. When I was teaching preschool, the administration made US change the "accidents" and forbid us from sending the child to the nurse. Ya... I really got my Master's to change dirty underpants... Even at 4 & 5, lots of kids still had accidents...

And the unfortunate thing is, some parents just don't care enough to potty train them correctly. They just expect the teachers to deal with it.

  • Hard to say. I would actually lean towards siding with the school on this one. Assuming that the school has a "must be potty trained" rule for attendance (BTW- I'm guessing that this is a private school/preschool/daycare (the article doesn't make any mention that this is a public funded institution), parents are expected to abide by it. It's not like they kick a kid out with one or two accidents a month. In the article, it mentions only after 8/month, do they send the child home.

  • I'm with the school on this one.  The preschool DD will go to in the fall (and that I am on the board of) has a potty training policy-- children must be potty trained to attend.  To me, 8 accidents in a month means the child is not fully potty trained and needs more work at home or in a childcare environment with enough staff to help.  Yes, accidents happen, but DD hasn't had 8 accidents in a month even in the first few weeks we were potty training (which was before she was 2 even).  I feel for the parents, but this child obviously needs extra help in this area and a preschool environment isn't the place for that.

ETA: I will say, though, that if this was based on only one month I'd be much more upset.  It sounds like its been going on for at least two months and I think that's ample time for the parents to address the problem.
