Who is having Braxton Hicks already?

This might be more for 2nd+ time moms. I started to notice a couple a day at 13 weeks! Looked it up and it turns out it is normal, BH start as early as 6 weeks it just takes awhile to feel them for most women. I googled and found plenty of boards where they talked about these early contractions as no big deal so I am wondering who is having them here?

It feels like a very mild cramp and really you need to have you hand on your abdomen to tell it's hard. Not painful or regular.

HOWEVER, Because of my PTL with DS, I am on Progesterone shots to stop contractions but still had like 3 or 4 yesterday and 2 today (probably because I had the shot Friday)

Anyone else noticing them yet?

  • Not yet, but I have felt them pretty early and often with the first two.  Mention it to your doc at your next appointment anyway though...you never know.  I had a friend feeling them early (18-ish weeks) and told her it was normal, but she ended up on BR for pre-term labor a week or two later and stayed that way until she delivered at 37 weeks.

    thanks for replying!

My dr knows which is why we started the progesterone at 14 weeks instead of 16 weeks but I am going to fill her in that the shot is not fully working yet.

I am hoping these remain BH like and don't get like your friends did!

  • I had one for the first time, that I noticed, today. I had them starting at 20 weeks with DS and had them a lot throughout the second half of my pregnancy. I thought I would have DS early for sure but he had to taken out by c/s at 39 weeks, so they weren't harmful for me, just annoying and they caused me a lot of stress.
  • I am a first-timer, but I think BH must be what I have been experiencing in the last couple of days.  Just a tightening of the uterus, then it is hard for like a minute, then it is normal again.  I plan to ask my Dr. tomorrow at my appt.  Is 17 weeks early to feel this?? I know nothing.

  • I'm on 17p too, and I swear the day after I had my first shot I had more contractions than ever! I've been having them for a couple of weeks, but not regular at all. With PTL it's always a little scary, but well, that's pregnancy, right?

  • I'm a first timer.  I've been having cramps on and off since BFP.  I hate to sound ignorant, but I wasn't aware it was even an issue.  I guess I should bring it up to my dr.

It's not an issue. It's actually totally normal! Unless those cramps are painful or come like 6x an hour for more than an hour (even after you drink like 4-6 glasses of water or juice and rest as much as you can), it's just normal BH contractions.

  • Ive been having them for a couple weeks. Its odd, because I never had them with either of my other kids. This baby is doing all kinds of things to me Ive never had happen before.

Stay hydrated too!  Dehydration can cause contractions as well.  GL!  I hope you don't end up on BR - my friend that I mentioned was in the hospital from weeks 19-34, and back in at 36 weeks until they induced her at 37 weeks - awful experience - she lost the identical twin around 22 weeks but the other was completely healthy.  Rest when you can too.
