TTC After a Loss

did DH get tested?

I've been thinking about this for a few days and cflocco's question brought it to the surface. A friend of mine has started the very testing that several women have mentioned (the dye one, the saline one, and b/w).  Her husband also had a sperm count done, though I think that's the only thing he will have checked out.

Many women have posted that they've had the above tests done, along with the RLP, but I haven't seen anybody post about DH. Has your DH been tested? I know this may not apply to many of you since we're TTCAL, not Trouble TTC, but several of us probably fall into both categories. My ob won't do any tests on us yet, we have 5 months to go for that (10 months, pg, m/c, then 6 added months).

Re: did DH get tested?

  • We were TTC 3+ years before we got our BFP.  DH got tested after we didn't conceive after one year of trying and my tests were "normal."  My Ob/Gyn had him test, but according to the doc, my DH was "studly."  After being referred to an RE after 2 years TTC, he tested my husband again....still ok.  Its really not that big of a deal for the guys.  With all of the poking, prodding, bw, etc, this is the least they can do.  c'mon, guys have been doing this since they were 12!  :)   GL!

  • SA's are really the only test that most men need.  If there is a problem, there may be further testing, but from the time I spent on the TTTC board, this really seemed to be the majority of people's experiences.  I do know that if there is a problem, men will usually be referred to a urologist for further testing (depending of course on the problem).  Unfortunately, women's testing is by nature more invasive, painful, difficult, and overall more expensive.

We each went through testing at about 10 months TTC.  My testing was limited to bloodwork and a clomid challenge.  DH had a SA.  We got pregnant while taking the clomid challenge, so testing stopped.  If I don't get pregnant this cycle, I will have an HSG between CD 5-9 on my next cycle.

  • My DH had an SA the same time that my dr. was testing my bloodwork.  I haven't had an HSG yet, but that's the next step.  DHs SA was abnormal so we were working on a few things to up our chances on that end.  My Dr. is doing an HSG next cycle if we don't have success this cycle because DHs SAs are back to normal.

  • DH hasn't needed a semen analysis at this point, but he had b/w for genetic testing.  We're lucky I'm the one that has to go through most of the testing because DH almost passed out just from having 1 vial of blood drawn.  :-)
