Same here. I have been on the nursery/baby gear board a lot trying to get a feel for what is useful and what is a waste of money. It's been really helpful. I have also asked friends with babies what they actually use.

Do you have any friends that have babies/LOs? A friend of mine came over one evening with the BRU catalogue and we went through everything. I really wished I'd had someone to do that for me, although I didn't register and didn't have a baby shower (I tried to buy as much used as possible).
Some things I told her were a life saver (the jolly jumper) that she never used, but every baby is different and it's not like she paid for it (she did register). I also told her she HAD to get a video monitor (if she could afford it), as I've just bought one now even though DD is over 2. Actually I'm using it for my toddler more than anything!
I think it was most beneficial in avoiding things you don't need....although I felt a wipes warmer was unnecessary, she registered for one as she had a boy. Oh, and pee-pee-tee-pees...lol.

I second Lucie's List. It covers what you really, truly need, as opposed to all of the other "stuff" the stores try to tell you is a necessity.
PS: Although if you're overwhelmed, don't read on past the sections about what you need. I had a mental breakdown yesterday reading the postpartum and Your Life sections that prompted a tear-fest and a "I'm not ready for this" text message to DH, lol.
I feel the same way, I went to BRU yesterday with my mom and left with a headache. I'm taking my best friend back with me, she offered to help steer me in the right direction to set up a registry. She recommended the Baby Bargains book and I've started reading that. I tried crib shopping for a 2nd time today and left the store with nothing, I'm right there with you.
