Breast pumps?

I know there's been posts about breast pumps recently but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask again quickly.

Anyone already bought one? What brand/style? Manual or electric? I want to get one at some point but there just seems to be so many options, and they are expensive. What if my milk doesn't come in? Can I return it? Sheesh, who knew a breast pump would be so overwhelming?

Re: Breast pumps?

  • I got Medela Freestyle because it was $94 at Target.  I had the pump in style on my registry, but from what I have read the freestyle is better.  I am keeping it sealed until after I deliver, if for some reason I can't pump I will sell it on ebay.

  • I bought the Medela Pump in Style used for $75.  Bought all new parts for it, but I understand some people have an ick factor there.  I have a "i saved a fortune" factor.

Absolutely had to have electric.  I bought a manual one to take on a trip with me and cried every time I had to pump bc my hand would cramp up and I was only getting dribbles.  It sucked.

I think you should act as if you are going to be successful.  If for some reason your milk doesn't come in, you can sell it.

  • You probably can't return it b/c open pump systems allow milk to get into the motor which can contaminate the entire system for future users.

You could see if your insurance covers the cost of a pump.

You could see if your hospital rents pumps, try it for a month or two before investing in your own.

Medela gets great reviews.  Ameda is a good closed system pump (so you could possibly sell it eventually).

Electric sounds like a must if you're a working mom b/c they're efficient.

  • I have the Medela Pump in Style- the tote bag one. I had issues with BF, but will try again with this LO. It was not the pumps fault though and I think it is a good one. I think it is a good idea to have one when LO comes home and electric is a must. You could check with the hospital about renting one like PP said. I think the hospital rental pumps are really good quality, but I don't know about the price. And I'm pretty sure no store would let you return a pump unless it is defective.

  • Personally, I'd wait to buy until you know your milk is established. I've actually known several women that were unable to successfully breastfeed and had shelled out $300 for a fancy Medela, that they couldn't return and *might* be able to sell at a fraction of the cost. They ended up giving them away, but using used breastpumps is not recommended.

I bought a simple, Lansinoh double electric pump for $150. I knew I wouldn't be using it much, so I knew it'd serve it's purpose, and it did. If I was going back to work full-time, I would have spent more and got a Medela, but it wasn't necessary for me to have a fancy pump.

  • I have an Ameda Purely Yours Double Electric pump.  I was recommended when I was pregnant by my SIL's sister, so that's what I went with.  I would  guess the only way you could return it is if it is unopened.  You may want to wait to purchase until after you know if you will BF or not.  Until then you can always rent one.

Why I like the pump:  The milk goes directly into the bottle and not through any tubes.  It was pretty effecient as I ended up exclusively pumping for a year.  It was very easy to clean and I think it's a pretty good value for the price.  I see they sell that at BRU now.  I purchased mine from and ebay store that that is basically all they sell; that was 3 years ago though.

  • I think I'll be getting a Medela. I've heard good reviews, and I want an electric one because I work full time.

My insurance covers a pump, but I actually have to pay for it and the money goes towards my deductible. So my doctor gave me a prescription to get one through a medical supply company (so insurance will cover it), and I'm getting it early to help spread out the cost a little. You can call your insurance company to see if they'll cover one.

  • I got the medela pump in style - metro bag. I couldn't pass up the great deal so I shelled out the money in advance.

  • I put the Medela Swing on my Registry. That way if no one buys it for me, I can get 10% off after baby comes at BRU. The Swing is just a one breast pump, not the double. I am not planning on going back to work after baby is born so there was no reason for me to get a double IMO. :)

I just got this deal today at Target.  I was so excited I called 3 people to tell them.  They didn't care :(  I will also keep it sealed incase I have lactation problems.
