Cloth Diapering

Help me with my well water and diaper washing routine!

We moved about a month ago and since then I've been battling diaper laundry. We've had some stink issues -- we use microfiber and I've had to start bleaching my inserts every other week or so.  I'm also now having issues with some mild diaper rash - it's more like red, dry patches. Doesn't seem to bother her, but it bugs me. And now I've started to have trouble with staining.

We have well water now, so the water is pretty darn hard.  We currently use RnG Hard Rock, but I'm experimenting. I have some Lulu's In the Fluff I sometimes use as well, but it's not particularly strong. It makes a nice detergent for a quick prewash though...

  • I haven't done diaper laundry on well water, but I grew up on it for all our regular laundry. I'd suggest adding some Calgon water softener to the wash cycle (Green Mountain Diapers says it's safe). It should be found near where the detergent is in the store (or on Amazon):

  • i 2nd the calgon.  i'm not on well water but our city water is super hard and i have to end up using close to 3TBS RnG hard rock and then at least twice a month i strip the built up minerals out with calgon.  (do a normal wash and then i'll add about 1/2 the amt and do several hot washes to get everything out.)

  • We have a softener system on our well but I still use Calgon b/c we're borderline hard. We have a lot of iron out here so I don't think it hurts to add in a little more prevention.  I currently use classic rock but will be switching to hard rock when that bag is gone.
