NTTCALR: Help pick my kitchen color

I also posted this on D&R but figured I'd ask you all too.

I'm going to be redoing my kitchen this weekend. I recently discovered that our "backsplash" is actually textured wallpaper, and since I didn't like it anyway, I'm taking it down and painting the kitchen all one color. We have a greenish speckled countertop and an open floorplan where everything is all this neutral beige/light brown. I want some color! I'm thinking a pale yellow but it's got to be able to flow with the rest of the rooms.

Any ideas for colors? If you have a yellow you love, I'd love to see it...or if you have another idea for a color.

TIA!

Julie

  • ooo.. we used Tea-Time Yellow? from Lowes in our kitchen and it is gorgeous.. if I had a pic I would show you, I can post one once I get home today at about 2.. It's not too bright and it's not to pale..

I think Yellow would look great with green countertops.

  • We recently painted out kitchen too.  Here is a pic.  I wanted a yellow, but not too yellow.  This paint is from Bear (Home Depot) and it's called Vanilla Milkshake.

  • I'm not much of a yellow girl. Have you looked into a blue color? We painted our front room RL blue but I can't think of the name...
  • I'm redoing my kitchen too! Well, we just ordered the cabinets so the madness won't start for another 3-4 weeks.

I love the idea of green and yellow.  I'm going to be looking at a lot of paint over the next few weeks so if I come across a yellow that I really like, I will let you know!

I think I may need some help picking a color too!  We choose dark cabinets-the finish is called espresso.  We choose light granite countertops called kashmir something.  Then, we choose a blue/green/grey tile backsplash.  My DH is leaning towards green but I am thinking more of a neutral.  I will post some pics later hopefully to see what you ladies think!

  • Also not a big yellow fan here (I had a couple unfortunate yellow choices at my first condo and it has stuck with me). But that being said, Kristys yellow is very subtle and nice. But next to beige, in an open concept, yellow may not stand out. Given the countertop, have you considered a pale grey? This might look better with stainless or dark appliances, admittedly. We went grey in our kitchen when we remodeled (it was PINK when we bought the house-ick) and love the look. It's also a little different for a kitchen, which can be fun.

  • My entire house is beige and when we repainted the kitchen I felt the same way.  I needed color but didn't want to over power the kitchen.  We chose a light blue (Behr Blue Opal) that is really nice.  It gives the room a light breezy feel.

Just a suggestion, we used the paint that includes the primer this time and boy did it cut down on the number of numbers of layers we had to put on the wall.  Its a little more expensive but totally worth it.

  • I'm picking colors right now too & fell in love with "Sundew" by Sherwin Williams.  It's part of the "color concepts" line- very subtle/pale yellow & just looks so cheery/happy.  I'm not using it in the room we are painting, but I wish I could!

  • Yellow would be pretty.  My kitchen is yellow, but it's like spicy mustard yellow, not pale.  How would you feel about red?

Is your style more traditional or modern?

  • How about neutral beige with a light green accent wall?

My style's definitely more traditional than modern. I think I'd love the look of red, but I'm not daring enough to put it in my house. My most daring was grey in the bedroom and even that was an accent wall (which I love).

I also read the other post about a green accent wall...I like that idea. I will have to post a picture of my whole kitchen once I get home because there are not really full walls in there. It would make it difficult to choose.

I'm still leaning, thought, towards yellow. I wrote down the colors so I can check them out tomorrow--we live right by Lowes, Home Depot and Sherwin Williams, which is nice. Unfortunately, I can't see Kristy's pics!!

Thanks again for the ideas, please keep them coming!

    I appreciate all the ideas

  • I lean toward colors that really pop and make statements.  My kitchen is Chinese Red, den is bright golden yellow, family room is pale green, bedrooms have accent walls in purple and dark navy....My philosophy is that each room is it's own so I don't worry too much about how it flows..the hallways are all neutral but that's it!

Since you said everything was light and you wanted color, the yellow may not be enough!  Maybe "different" blue/gray colors and even "brick" colors will give you the color you want and offset the light cabinets and countertop?!?!

Don't be afraid to take a chance.  Everyone loves my dark red kitchen but they all say they could never do it!!  Have fun!

This!  I love blues and greys.  I do have one bright candy apple red accent wall to go with my grey.
