Success after IF

vaccination question

I keep hearing people say (usually FB friends, not here) they like to split up the 1 year vaccinations, and admittedly, I have done no research on this. We have followed our pedi's schedule and the girls have done just fine.

What about the 1 year vaccinations has people wanting to split it up?  Can someone explain or point me to a website that explains this?

FWIW, this is how their schedule looks coming up:

12 mos

PCV13, PPD, Hepatitis A

15 mos

Varivax, MMR

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I wanted to split them but my pedi only carries the mixed shot.

  • We split them b/c of the varicella and MMR, which our pedi usually does at 12 months. I just didn't want him to have live vaccines (1) at the same time as anything else and (2) at the same time as each other. Not because I think they cause autism, but because they have greater odds of more serious side effects so I wanted them isolated to be able to watch for such side effects, and because Toodle is ALWAYS sick so I preferred not to overload him with 2 live vaccines when he's usually already battling something. I know those aren't the most scientific reasons but our pedi was fine with them. So we did all the other 12 month vaccines on schedule, then varicella about a month and a half later and MMR at 17 months (only did it that late because he kept getting ear infections so we had to continue postponing it until he was healthy).

  • Aiden is on the extended vaccination schedule.  Only one vaccine at a time.  I never wanted him to have more than one vaccine at each appointment.  Even though we had to go every month some months, I felt it was better than getting 3 at one time.  If he were to have a reaction, I'd know which vaccine it was.  We found a pedi that would do this schedule.  There are only 4 in Orlando, but we really liked the one we chose, so it wasn't a tough decision.
My choice isn't because of autism either.

This was basically our reasoning.  Our schedule is slightly different because we've delayed since DD was born but she was up for MMR, flu, and varicella at 12 months.  Of those the most critical IMO was flu due to the coming flu season.  So we did that one.  Then she was sick for months...ironically and we couldn't do MMR until 15 months.   Varicella I'm not sure when we'll do it, or if, but that's based on my concerns with the vax and it's long term efficacy.   She has her 18 month appt in two weeks and we'll discuss varicella then.

  • Eh, we did them all at the same time.  Pedi told us that the risks of side effects don't change if you break them up.  So Sam had MMR, varicella (varivax, I presume), HepA and prevnar (pneumococcus).  He had a mild fever about 10 days later, but the pedi said that 1:13 kids has a fever and/or rash 7-12 days after MMR.  No big woop :)

  • I split the 1 year vax with Nolan for Schmoodle's reasons exactly, and when we had Linc vaccinated, things were nuts around here, and I did not split them. Linc had a reaction to both MMR and varicella that was a big woop. He had a fever that was butting up with 105* for 5-6 days, a full body rash, and the following week, he broke out in chicken pox (mild-moderate).

Splitting them may or may not have lessened the side effects but I do know that we will be splitting them with Gwen, and the moral of our story is that Linc had a hard time with his shots at age 1.

  • We did them all, plus prevnar (I think) and the flu shot.  No problems here.
