AW: DD's Hair

DD has these crazy sprial curls...  (hopefully you can see them in this picture).

The other day she asked me to blow dry her hair out straight... and it doesn't even look like the same kid!

Re: AW: DD's Hair

  • Do you also straighten your hair?  I ask, because DD and I both have super curly hair.  I never straighten mine, so I don't think my DD would know that it was possible to straighten hers.
  • Loading the player...
  • Both my husband and I have curly hair.  He keeps his so short, you'd never know.

I blow mine out straight when the humidity is low enough! LOL!!  But even when mine is curly - it isn't anywhere near as curly as DD's is.  The thing is, the straight hair doesn't last one her.  It just starts to curl up within an hour or so!

  • The straight hair doesn't really flatter her face, and nice going teacher her to worry that the way she is naturally isn't good enough at such a young age.
  • she is a beauty both ways!
  • really gibs??

    yes

  • Seriously Gibs? I don't know if you have straight or curly hair, but I think all women try to do different things with their hair and it has nothing to do with self-confidence or self-image issues.  I have naturally curly hair and I straighten it occasionally and know women with straight hair that curl it occasionally.  I think it's perfectly normal for a child to try and mimic their parents.  It's not like she told her daughter that she would look better with straight hair.  Her daughter expressed interest...no different than a little girl asking mom to paint her nails IMHO.

I think that straightening a young girl's curly hair and then probably ooohing and aaaahing over how nice it looked straight sends a message that isn't necessary or helpful at that age.  I also think that when we were young, we didn't have our moms flat-ironing our hair as preschoolers.  But it's not my kid and I won't have to deal with the psychological ramifications, so whatever.

So, I realize you're just stirring an otherwise boring pot, but I'll join in.  When I was little I used to have my grandma curl my super straight hair.  It was for fun.  I'm quite sure I have no psychological ramifications from it.

  • Not that I NEED to defend my actions... but, she asked, she wanted to see what her hair would look like straight.  So - I did it.  I agree with the previous posters... is it really any different than painting her fingernails??

I love her curls and while we giggled about how different she looked with straight hair, it was all back to curls when she woke up the next morning.  We were having a mommy and daughter moment... just the two of us laughing at how fun it is to do something different with her hair for 20 minutes in her life.  Big F'ing Deal.

  • Ignore Gibs lame attempt to stir up drama.

It's not like you slapped a chemical relaxer on your little's girls head.

So you straightened it. To me, it's not any different than if she asked you to braid it one day and wear aheadband the next.

And she looks adorable either way!

  • Thanks!!
