Pregnant after 35

Introduction

Hi all - I'm new dad to be here. My SO is 38 years old and is in her 20th week. We are both really nervous as this is our first child. We lost a pregnancy over a year and a half ago and so we've been on pins and needles with this pregnancy. Given her age and things like that we've been more nervous but so far so good. All of the tests have gone well and everything seems to be okay so far. We go for our Level 2 Ultrasound next week which will be a big deal (we've been told at least).

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and hope that if/when questions arise you wonderful women can assist a dad. Smile

Re: Introduction

  • Congratulations, and welcome!

The 20 week anatomy scan appointment is so fun.  I think it'll really put your minds at ease.

Previous losses make it so hard to just relax and enjoy the ride!  Hopefully things mellowed out for you guys after the first trimester was over?

  • First of all.. so sorry for your loss.

Welcome!   I bet you will add a great perspective to this board! Help us understand the daddy point of view??  My hubby has a hard time understanding my need to talk to people I don't really know..

I agree with Peppernut.  The 20th week ultrasound is really neat and will put your mind at ease.... Good luck.

  • Welcome and congrats!  I'm 37 and expecting #2.  Was nearly 36 when I had #1.  The 20 wk ultrasound is def. fun.  I'm wishing I could have another ultrasound before the big day, but don't expect to (unless I go past the 40 week mark again).  Enjoy getting to see your LO!

  • WoW! Welcome daddy!

Some of us here (like myself) are first timers, so we can share what we're going through but don't have much expertise to share.

For the record, 38 isn't that bad. Many of us are 40 or over (such as myself). I am having some complications including gestational hypertension, but those could just as easily happen to a younger lady :)

My doctor said that age in and of itself doesn't put you at high risk. For me it was things like having PCOS, being borderline diabetic and being hypothyroid that put me in the high risk category.

  • Congratulations, I'm also new to this board but I just wanted to say it sounds like everything is going great so far and I think you'll really enjoy the 20 week u/s.  They're so much fun.

I have to go in for an amnio in a couple of weeks and unfortunately because of my youngest heart condition I'll be going to the Dr.'s every two weeks and I'll also have to go for an Eco at 20 weeks.

I can't to see this baby again on the u/s machine.  I just love watching the baby move.  I still can't feel anything yet but I should soon.

  • That's cool to have a dad on the boards.....

Sorry about the first pregnancy but congrats on this one.  I lost a baby the first time around and then got pregnant a month later and have the most amazing daughter and a new one on the way and i was 37 for the first one and I am 39 this time around....so relax and just enjoy the ride.  it can be hard to relax - I swear us pregnant women drive ourselves crazy with all these crazy worries but it is natural to want the best for a baby that ytou can't even see.

The others are right the 20 week scan is so much fun and so amazing.  just so you know the scan is about looking at fingers, toes, spine, head, etc.  It is a long visit and you will think oh my god there is something wrong because it is taking so long....no no no this is what they are supposed to do....they look at the heart, brain, etc.  Meanwhile you will be falling even more in love with your baby.......enjoy and relax....it is hard to relax completely but it helps to be relax especially for your wife who will not always be in control of her hopes, fears, etc because yes the hormones are crazy!  :)

  • Sorry for your loss, I too have been through it and it's tough and making this an uptight pregnancy.

Welcome! You will get all your questions answered here for sure. All the ladies are great.  I am 37 and due in August! Congrats and Enjoy your journey

  • welcome! I thought for a second you were MY SO, we have the exact same story, so I can relate. We were very nervous the first trimester and that 20 wk ultrasound put us at ease. Not to say there aren't things that we don't worry about ( sex seems to be something he is scared to engage in for fear of early labor) but the only advice I can give you is to make sure you communicate with her!  The more we talk about our fears, the smaller they seem to be. And the closer we become.
