menstrual cramps

So I will be 34 weeks tomorrow and for the past 12 hours had 2-3 contractions and now those have stopped and now just  have those miserable never ending period cramps. My doc didnt seem worried and doesnt want me to go to hospital until 6 contractions an hour. I am of course resting and did not go to work today and wont go tomorrow. Has anyone experienced this and how long before actual labor? Any ideas on how to get some relief?
