Cloth Diapering

Not concerned about cuteness- am I the only one?

Sure, I think a fluffy butt is cute, but I don't really care about colors and prints. Yes, I have a couple of printed thirties covers, and we have (and like) colored covers and pocket diapers, but I don't really care about all the fun prints and patterns. Part of the reason I'm cloth diapering is to save money, so I don't see the need to buy a bunch of patterned dipes I don't really need.

And I'm not knocking those of you who do buy these, but it's not for me.

Re: Not concerned about cuteness- am I the only one?

  • I used to not be.  Then I got my stash, started using everything and figuring out what did and didn't work for us, sold stuff, traded for other stuff, and now I'm at the point where I have everything that works so I'm going to start collecting for fun.  DH is on board with it, since it's my "thing" now.

    (holy run-on sentence)

  • my husband said that it could be worse.... I could be addicted to drugs :)

  • I'm with ya. I have just started building my stash but I am all about saving money. It's kind of become a game to see what the bottom line best price I can get is. And I've done well! I think I'm just under $100 for 9 diapers (various), 2 covers and 3 inserts. I've gotten free shipping on everything. Not too shabby:)
  • i used to not care but now i think it's a little bit fun :)

  • I am with you!  I am still in the early stages of building my stash (two swadlebee covers and 2 dz gerber prefolds--yeah, I didn't research the gerbers before I bought them but the were BOGO), but the reason I am cloth diapering is to save money....I plan on buying mostly all gender neutral covers to use with subsequent children.

Not that I don't LOVE the prints and colors!!!  My "frilly fluff" will be DIY or gifted...Did I mention I'm a little bit of a cheepskate, lol?

  • I wish I could buy for cuteness, but I am with you on this one. I have enough diapers, mostly Kawaii pockets, and I just can't justify buying more diapers when my major reason to cd was to save money. I do think that the colors that I have are cute, and I love their fluffy bums, but yeah they are pockets and nowhere near as cute as all of the fitteds out there!
  • I used to not care...the fun colors/prints were just a bonus of CDing.  But after hanging around here too much an addicition was created haha.

  • I didn't care, but I have found that the fitteds work better and they just happen to have a lot of prints for the same price as plain.

This! My stash only consists of 6 prefolds, 5 proraps covers, 3 kissaluvs and three that I bought on etsy. Nothing fancy. Just practical.

Wait, that's your whole stash?  For a nb?  Do you have any backups?  It's doable, but you're going to have to be doing laundry at least once a day, if not twice.

ETA:  Just saw that you probably already had your baby.  So I'm curious, is it working?

  • i guess some people do laundry a few times a day because i just sold some diapers to a lady on craigslist and she had been diapering a 3 month old with 8 prefolds since birth. she was like, "yay, i have enough to wash once a day now".

Wow! That really is a bare bones stash. You must be doing a lot of laundry! I have 20 infant prefolds and a few covers, and I felt like I was doing laundry all the time. I ran out a couple of times and used the gigantic econobum prefolds we have (hate those covers, though). I'm glad that my BG's are fitting him now because we have 6 more dipes in our rotation.

I'm geting ready to buy the bigger size prefolds and some more pockets. I'm going to buy at least 36 premium prefolds this time.  I'm also going to nuy more pocket diapers for daycare so I don't have to do laundry every night when I go back to work and some hemp inserts for overnight.

This. Also, once I bought my stash I started trying new things here and there (and still do), but I only use money that I have from selling the diapers that we don't use/like anymore. So if I want to buy something new that just so happens to be cute, I'm only spending money that I had already invested into diapers to begin with.

I consider myself pretty cheap and frugal also, so I like finding good deals, but why only look for plain old diapers at a good deal when you can really search (it's a hobby!) for the super cute ones at a good deal?

I can see this. I'm just getting into a point where I'm not exhausted all the time, so I can see myself searching more for some deals. But I'm not going to a bunch that I don't need.

  • The cute patterns and prints are just a bonus for me. I buy what works for us and that happens to be fitters at home and pockets at daycare. Dh and I set a diaper budget when we started. After that was spent, I've used my fun money to buy the cute diapers, because I like to spend my money on my kids, rather than myself. I also don't spend a million dollars on a diaper. I have bought most of my stash used and refuse to pay above retail for a diaper. And I'm willing to pay the high price for fitteds because of the natural materials and quality. I'm one of the cheapest people you will meet, I have a lot of cute diapers in my stash, but haven't spent a ton of money!

  • I, also, am doing this to save money and do what is best for LO's bum. My whole stash is white, except 1 green and 1 yellow diaper. I'm hoping to use them for the next several babies, so I need to stay gender neutral and white is the best bet. However, that said, I am starting to get excited when I see babies in cute CDs. I can see that if I had the money, this could become an obsession.

  • Yea, I was definitely just fine with my prefolds and covers at first (and we still mostly just use these), but now it's fun to look at others and try new things. If I don't need it then I don't buy it, BUT if I really like something and want to try it then I'll sell something else to fund it. It's just all part of the fun!

  • Anything is cuter than a disposable diaper so I think my super bland stash is just fine. Besides, I'm not going out showing off my underwear, so I don't think my kids need to either.
