Yeast diaper rash

Have any of you dealt with this? DD has had pretty good luck avoiding diaper rash, but she has been on antibiotics for a sinus infection and now it's pretty bad. The nurse told me to use an anti fungal cream and mix it with Vaseline. I've been doing that for the past three days an no change. We have an appointment this afternoon but was wondering if anyone had any tips until then.

Re: Yeast diaper rash

  • I have read somewhere that coconut oil has anti-fungal properties and clears up rashes pretty well.

  • It happened to DS where his circumcision was. We had to get a prescription anti fungal to get rid of it.

  • we tried lotramin and used desatin on top.  it helped a little, but didn't clear it up completely.  I was taking fenugreek at the time to increase my supply.  I thought there might be a link between the two so i stopped taking it.  the rash was gone within 2-3 days.

  • I would think vaseline would trap moisture and make the yeast worse.  I've used the lotrimin and then put triple paste on top.  Try skippiing the vaseline and see if that helps.
  • I've used Lotramin, too, for DD's yeast diaper rash (also caused by antibiotics for a sinus infection), with no other ointments on top (per the pedi).  It was gone within 2 days of using the Lotramin.  I have read, though, that there are several types of yeast that cause these infections, and if the antifungal properties in Lotramin don't work, then a prescription cream will do the trick. Good luck!

Oh - and in the future, you can feed your kiddo yogurt to help prevent the rash (bc of the live cultures).  I did this and she was fine for the first 10 days she was on antibiotics, but then I was on penicillin for a minor surgery I had, and the back-to-back antibiotics is what gave her the rash :(

  • One of my girls got a pretty bad yeast rash when she was really little.  The only thing that worked quickly was Nystatin (rx from doc) every other change with triple paste in between.  Took care of it pretty quickly.  The rashes get a lot worse if you don't knock them out quickly, and they tend to recur.
