Reusable swim diaper??

I feel dumb asking this, but I just ordered Matty a reusable swim diaper from amazon; it came today and it's basically a plastic baby speedo covered with a cute print. I couldn't tell from amazon, but am i supposed to put something under it, diaper-wise, or is it just a plastic poop catcher?? I know disposable swim diapers don't really catch pee, and I kind of can't imagine putting some kind of cloth diaper underneath the speedo to go swimming, but it kind of seems wrong to just put him in the "diaper" alone. I am a ninny. Thanks!

Re: Reusable swim diaper??

  • I just use the resusable swim diaper under his regular swim suit. it is a glorified poop catcher:)

  • I think as long as it catches the poop, you'll be fine to use it as it is.  We had one from BRU, and it was kind of like the material on the outside of cloth pocket diapers, without an insert of course.  It was really tight around the thighs and waist.

ETA:  Wait, did you mean you'd put him in just the diaper.  I suppose that would be alright, but I would always put swim trunks over the diaper.

Right, the swim diaper under the trunks. His trunks all have built in plastic liners, too. I guess both together they'll be ok?? I would die if he turded in the Y pool during family swim...

  • I think he'll be fine.  I've found that the cloth swim diapers hold the poop in better than the disposable ones.

  • Nothing under it. No swim diaper will catch the pee (nasty I know) and the only purpose of a swim diaper is to catch the pee.  We have one for my younger DD and she has pooped in it and its so nasty to take off her but it does the trick and with some spray and wash, no poop stain or anything.  My DD choses to were her swim suit over the cloth swim diaper but I have seen tons of kids in just the swim diaper.

  • Our pool has a 3 layer rule; swim diaper, plastic cover, and swimming suite.

So up you use a disposable swim diaper, then a reusable plastic speedo/diaper/cover, then trunks? I was trying to go green and stop using the disposables, so I bought the reusable thinking it would replace the disposables, but like I was saying originally, it doesn't seem quite right to just put him in a plastic speedo and trunks, but the whole point being was to quit the disposables, so therein lies my quandary...
