Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is your 19 month old in a toddler bed?

I have been bed sharing with LO for pretty much her whole life. We are moving this week and I would like to move her to her own room and bed. I don't think the crib will go over well and figured a toddler bed would be an easier transition. Does it seem to young? How does your 19+ monther do in a toddler bed?

  • it seems like an easier transition if she is already used to being in a real bed.

  • DS is almost 19 months and he's been in a toddler bed for probably almost 2 months now.  He does completely fine in it.  He only fell out once the first night. His door stays shut and we have a safety knob on it because now he gets up in the morning and plays with his toys before I go in to get him.  Make sure the room is baby-proofed and that LO can't hurt herself.

Also, DS was in a crib since 3 months and he did fine in that, too.  I'm not sure how the transition will be for your LO.

    HTH.

  • We didn't switch DS til 22 months and it was a piece of cake, but I have definitely heard of many doing it earlier than 19 months! GL

  • Love your siggy picture, those boots are so cute!!

We switched Isaac at 18 months because he climbed out 3 times in one night. He did just fine :)

  • It can definitely be done.  I think you have a unique situation where you're already bed sharing and your LO isn't used to a crib.  I'd go with a toddler bed.  I think you should probably talk up her new big girl bed in her new room, in the new house, etc.  On the flip side, transitions like this tend to make kids feel a little insecure.  She will have a brand new house which could be scary, disorienting, or just different.  So she may want to bed share for a little bit until she's more comfortable in her new home.  But, if you have her big girl bedroom already set up, she'll probably get used to it and the transtion when she's ready.

Thanks! Ya, I think the crib transition would be hard, and then to just transition her into a big girl bed a few months later. We will definitely bed share with her for a few nights until she gets used to things, and if she gets scared or anything at night once she is in the bed, obviously.
