3rd Trimester

WWYD re: broken tooth

Well, I was eating a brownie tonight and noticed that a piece of my molar had broken off. Darn brownie.

I'm 36 weeks and I'm assuming novocaine is fine at this point. I am in zero pain and pretty broke right now. I know I probably should go get the tooth taken care of, but would it be best to hold off until after LO is born? I have a history of having babies early, so it's a possibility this one will be here in 3 weeks or less, but would it be bad to wait at least that long before getting this taken care of?

  • I would at least call your dentist, I would not wantto risk it getting infected.

This. If it's more a cosmetic issue then you could probably wait, but with all the funky things that happen in our mouths during pregnancy, I'd at least want to know what they say.

  • I would not wait. Call your dentist tomorrow and see what they advise. You will most likely need a letter from your OB stating if x-rays are ok and which novocaine they can use.

I 2nd this my mom works for a dentist and is always saying that things are easier to fix sooner rather than later -like if it did get infected. Not to mention tooth infection can be a major health risk for you and baby. Can cause heart myopathies/blood infection.  My ob stressed the importance of good dental care during pregnancy due to risks associated with poor oral care. In fact our health dept offers a free dental visit/cleaning to pregnant moms because of this.  I definitely would get it looked at.

  • Yeah, I wasn't even thinking about an infection. Guess I'm calling the dentist tomorrow. Thanks.
  • I would do it now, I broke off part of my tooth before Xmas and got a new crown (no note needed from midwife).  They can at least take a look at it and either do a temporary crown or sealant (can't remember what it's called that they put on my tooth before my appt, but it was like White Out).  Plus it seems like so much more of a PITA to try and deal with it after baby is born if you don't need to (a temporary can stay on for awhile at least).

  • Are you frickin' serious? I'm pretty sure we have exactly the same life because a couple days ago the exact same thing happened to me and I've been debating what to do. Weird.

You're kinda freaking me out now. I'm not sure we could have more similar lives right now! Well, since I'm newish in the area, do you have a dentist rec for me Wink

  • I broke one of my molars too. I'm calling my dentist first thing in the morning because I don't want it getting infected. It doesn't hurt unless I bite down on something hard.

I'm going to try out Health Partners clinic (there's a dental office in there) in *** Rapids. I've never been there before but I liked the clinic there overall for my early OB appointments.
