TTC After a Loss

Taking temps when it's freezing in your house

We don't use our heater when we're sleeping, so in the morning it's been dropping below 65...even to the 50's at times in our house, which makes the tip of my thermometer cold.  I can tell my temp has been higher than what my BBT says on the first take, so I take it again right away and it is higher.  I've tried to hold it in my hands for a few seconds but I'm afraid that will mess my temps up too.

Am I wrong for taking it a second time?

  • Digital themometers don't give you a final reading until the temp reading stabilizes and gets an accurate measure of your actual temperature.  Your first measurement should be accurate.  The second reading is likely higher because of the extra awake time and movement.

  • Like pp said - it shouldn't matter. You can keep your thermometer under your pillow to eliminate this concern, though.

  • I don't think my BBT is warming up to the temp in my mouth the silver part is sooo cold.  It beeps way too early.  When it's not so cold in the house it takes a longer time...sometimes I even fall back asleep it takes so long.  My first temp this morning was 97.4, it seemed to beep really fast.  I took it RIGHT AWAY and it was 97.9...I don't think I was awake and moving around enough for it to be that different.

Maybe I'll try to find something to keep it in that will fit on my bedside table and see if that makes a difference.

  • I don't have any advice, but I have tried taking my temp 2-3 times in a row and every time I get different temps, sometimes drastically! Either my BBT is wacky, my body's wacky or I suck at taking my temp!

  • I've wondered this too.  But what I've always been told is only temp once otherwise you'll drive yourself crazy! :)

  • I'm a miser with my money in regards to the heating bill so our house is similar to yours.  I always go with the first temp and it has been working out for me.  As far as multiple readings it's happened to me too.  Just go with the first!
